"If cannabis is harmful, why does it make me feel relaxed?" It's a question I hear often—especially from young people trying to make sense of their mental health experiences.
Many people use cannabis during stressful periods because it can temporarily create feelings of relaxation or calm. Another common belief is: "All my friends use it, so it can't be that harmful."
But mental health isn't one-size-fits-all.
Research suggests that regular use of high-potency cannabis may increase the risk of psychosis in some individuals, particularly those with a family history or underlying genetic vulnerability.
The challenge? We don't always know who is vulnerable until symptoms appear.
This doesn't mean everyone who uses cannabis will develop psychosis. It does mean that understanding the risks, having informed conversations, and making educated choices about your mental health are important.
If you have questions about psychosis, cannabis use, or mental health in general, we'd love to hear from you.
