He came in for a routine health check. No pain, no weight loss,
nothing that felt wrong.

The scan showed a large mass behind his abdominal organs, in a
space called the retroperitoneum. It reached from just below the
liver down into the pelvis, had grown around his right kidney,
and lay against the tube that drains it.

Most of it was harmless fatty tissue. Parts of it had begun
turning into a cancerous tumour.

The retroperitoneum is a roomy space. A tumour can enlarge here
for a long time before it presses on anything the body notices.
That is exactly why he felt nothing.

A stent was placed to protect the ureter before surgery began.
The tumour was removed complete and intact, in a single specimen,
and the kidney was preserved. He went home on the fourth day.
He is on regular follow-up.

A health check is not for the day something feels wrong. It is
for the years when nothing does.
