THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 6

The first dimensional tests

After completing the design, it was finally time to see whether our calculations worked in practice.

We decided to manufacture the largest PEDRO System first, followed by the smallest one. These two extreme configurations would later allow us to evaluate the system under different mechanical conditions.

After weeks of manufacturing, the first components were ready.

We assembled the newly created PEDRO System on a canine spinal model to verify the dimensions defined during the initial studies.

The first results were promising: screw length and diameter, positioning and interaction between the different components all worked as we had envisioned.

The next step was to manufacture the smallest system, where reduced dimensions could represent a greater mechanical challenge.

A few weeks later, both configurations were ready.

Now visual and dimensional checks were no longer enough.

It was time to put PEDRO to the test.

The next destination: Politecnico di Milano, for mechanical testing.

Dogs and cats walking again, playing and returning to the activities they love after spinal surgery.

Behind every one of these stories there is the work of veterinary surgeons and specialists, the trust of families and a shared goal: helping our four-legged friends regain their mobility and quality of life.

PEDRO System was created to support veterinary professionals with an advanced solution for spinal stabilization — but its true value can be seen in the patients themselves.

A special thank you to all the veterinarians, specialists and families who have shared these moments with us.

Watch the video and see PEDRO System in action.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 5

From digital design to reality

After hours of engineering, simulations and refinements, the first complete design of PEDRO System was finally ready.

Every component of the spinal fixation system now existed digitally: from polyaxial pedicle screws and rods to locking elements and interbody cages, the latter designed to be manufactured using 3D printing technology.

The next step was clear: turn the digital project into a real, tangible system.

Our engineers sent the designs into production. Additive-manufactured components were entrusted to specialized external partners, while the other components were produced by Leghe Leggere Lavorate, drawing on more than 25 years of experience in manufacturing implantable medical devices for both human and veterinary applications.

Close collaboration between our design engineers and production specialists proved essential. Manufacturing expertise helped identify potential production challenges, refine component geometries and introduce improvements to both performance and production efficiency.

Because a great design doesn't end on a computer screen.

It becomes real when engineering and manufacturing work together.

The first PEDRO System was finally taking physical shape.

Today is World Dog Day.

A day dedicated to the animals that bring companionship, trust and joy into our lives and that are also at the heart of our work every day.

At Overvet, dogs inspire us to keep looking forward.

Through research, engineering and collaboration with veterinary professionals, we develop innovative solutions designed to support surgeons and contribute to better care for their patients.

Because innovation in veterinary medicine has a very clear purpose: helping improve the health, wellbeing and quality of life of our four-legged companions.

Today we celebrate them and the veterinary professionals who take care of them every day.

Happy World Dog Day from Overvet!

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 4

From anatomy to 3D design

Once the anatomical measurements had been defined, it was time to turn our research into a real design.

Using 3D mechanical design software, our engineers began developing the first PEDRO System components, working with precise constraints related to dimensions, mechanical loads and stresses.

We started with the largest system, designed for dogs weighing approximately 70 kg, as its dimensions were closest to the human spinal devices we already knew.

The plan was to perfect this first configuration and then adapt the design to the medium and small systems.

The principles behind the threads, component interaction and overall mechanics came from our experience in human spinal fixation. But reducing the dimensions introduced a new challenge: maintaining mechanical performance even in smaller components.

Through dedicated 3D engineering simulations, we analyzed the most highly stressed areas and refined key dimensions to improve the design before manufacturing.

The first PEDRO System was taking shape.

But computer simulations were only the beginning.

The real test would come in the laboratory.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 3

From human experience to veterinary design

The development of PEDRO System started from the experience we had gained over the years working with devices for human spinal surgery.

The initial idea was to take the design principles behind these systems and adapt them to the anatomy of canine patients.

But simply reducing their dimensions wasn't enough.

Dogs can vary enormously in size, weight and skeletal structure. We therefore began by studying vertebral dimensions across different breeds and body sizes, identifying the measurements needed to create a system suitable for the widest possible range of patients.

Once the anatomical data had been collected, the next challenge was to determine how many implant sizes surgeons would need to address this variability in clinical practice.

The result was the development of three different PEDRO System sizes, designed for small, medium and large dogs — from approximately 7 kg to 70 kg.

One concept, adapted to different anatomies.
Because every patient requires the right fit.

THE STORY BEHIND PEDRO – EPISODE 2

Why did we need a new solution?

Every innovation starts by understanding the limits of what already exists.

When we began developing PEDRO System, we first looked at the standard approach for treating degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLSS) in dogs.

While effective in many cases, traditional spinal fixation techniques presented well-known challenges, including imaging limitations, a higher risk of surgical site complications and more demanding wound management.

Rather than accepting these limitations, we asked ourselves a simple question:

Could the principles that have transformed human spinal surgery also improve veterinary spinal fixation?

That question marked the beginning of the next step in the PEDRO journey.
