Side plank lateral raise

Great way to challenge the shoulders more as it demands more shoulder stability but I also love it because the weight you need for an exercise like this is pretty light

Let me know what other exercises you’d like to see

Progress doesn’t always mean adding more weight 👇🏼

This month, I’ve had to be a bit smarter with how I progress my training , especially while my hamstring is still bothering me.

Squats: same load, more reps = more total training volume without needing to load heavier.

Pull-ups: I’ve moved from neutral grip to conventional grip. I do as many unassisted reps as I can, then add a band and keep going until I hit around 12 reps. Again → more quality volume.

B-stance RDL → single-leg RDL: more demand on my ankle stability, plus I personally feel my adductors working harder which is an area I need to strengthen postpartum.

That’s also why I’ve added Copenhagen planks. My adductors still feel like a weak link at the moment, and getting them stronger is going to support a lot of the other things I want to do.

Flat bench → incline bench: simply because my old shoulder injury wasn’t loving flat bench. Incline feels good, so there’s no reason for me to force an exercise that irritates it.

I’ve also added face pulls to build a little more strength and control around the area of my shoulder that tends to cause me problems.

And walking lunges → step-ups: walking lunges aren’t something I particularly struggle with, even with HYROX coming up. Step-ups currently give me more of the stimulus I want through my legs and adductors, so they make more sense for me right now.

This is basically how I look at programming:

You don’t need to progress every exercise by putting another plate on the bar.

You can add reps.
Add volume.
Change the variation.
Change the grip.
Increase stability demands.
Target a weakness.
Or simply choose an exercise that your body tolerates better.

The goal isn’t to make every month look harder on paper. So hopefully this can help you see what progress or programme adaptation can look like

Being fit to me is so much more than just my performance in a gym, on a run, during a hyrox.

Yes I love the feeling of getting faster, getting stronger, making myself more resilient

But what I want more than all of that is to live my@life to the fullest. Without needing to slow down.

I want to keep up with my kids and when they don’t need me anymore, I want to keep up with my grandkids

I want to travel, carry my own bags, walk all day, get up off the floor easily, say yes to things and not have my body be the reason I have to slow down.

That’s what fitness means to me.

Not just performing well.

Not just looking like I train.

I want a body that can keep up with the life I want.

How heavy should I lift ? Is one of the most asked questions

And honestly it depends.

Firstly heavy is relative to each person

Secondly it depends on the exercise, your experience, your goals, the programme.

But as a general rule at the end of most working sets you should feel as if you could do another 2-3 reps without your technique completely breaking down.

This is what we essentially called reps in reserve

For example if your programme asks for 10 reps with 2RIR, that means 10 reps with two reps in reserve is the weight you’re aiming to find.

If you complete 10 and could keep doing for 10 it’s too light

If you complete 10 and could do 2 more then it’s probably the right challenge

If you’ve reached 10 but it felt almost impossible or your technique broke down then it’s probably too challenging

Not ever set needs to be raise to the absolute limit and you can absolutely build strength without maxing out.

We can all find reasons not to exercise.

And I’ve heard some very legitimate ones.

But I also believe that, most of the time, we can find some time.

That doesn’t mean we’ll never skip a workout. Sometimes life genuinely gets in the way, and sometimes taking the day off is exactly what we need.

But we can’t give in every single time we don’t feel like doing it.

Yesterday, I wanted to sack my workout off halfway through the first round. I’m just not really in the right headspace these days, if I’m being completely honest.

So I told myself: it’s 30 minutes.

You don’t need to perform.
You don’t need to excel.
You don’t even need to have a particularly good workout.

Just go through the movements.

And that’s exactly what I did.

And afterwards, I was glad I had.

Excuses are fine sometimes. Rest is fine sometimes. Changing the plan is fine sometimes.

But sometimes we also need to think about the person we want to be — and make the decision that person would make.

Not perfectly. Just often enough that we keep showing up for ourselves
