On the International Day of the Disappeared, ICMP is calling on States to uphold their responsibility to account for missing persons and to secure the rights of families and society as a whole.

"States have legal obligations to investigate cases of disappearance, and families of the missing have a corresponding right to receive information on the progress of investigations," said ICMP Director-General, Kathryne Bomberger. "Every missing person has a name, a life and a family. Every person has an equal right to be accounted for, regardless of gender, religion, nationality, citizenship or any other status or circumstance. Families have a right to truth and justice. These rights are not simply aspirations. They are rights that States have a responsibility to uphold."

"Families are not passive recipients of information. They are essential participants in the process of accounting for missing persons," Ms Bomberger said.

The tiny everyday item that offenders leave behind that's a DNA goldmine.

When processing a crime scene, a great Crime Scene Investigator is always looking for objects that involve high-friction contact.

One of the absolute best examples is a simple cigarette lighter!

Think about the physical action of using a lighter: you have to firmly scrape your thumb or finger against the rough, grooved metal lighter wheel. This intense friction acts like a microscopic grater, shedding living skin cells and packing them directly into the grooves of the wheel.

Even if the offender wiped down the plastic body of the lighter to remove fingerprints, those tiny skin cells trapped in the metal wheel remain safe and secure, waiting for a CSI to swab them!

Did you realize how much DNA we leave on the everyday items we handle?
