District 9 (2009) a sci-fi action thriller about alien refugees who live in marginalized squalor on Earth.

Fan Review: I first saw District 9 in theaters, and the marketing was everywhere. It primed audiences to see the "Prawns" as a menace, and the film's documentary style made everything feel incredibly real. As a sci-fi fan, I was hooked.

A decade later, my appreciation for the film has deepened. While my initial love was for the action and sci-fi elements, I now value its deeper themes. The film's world-building used documentary footage in a fresh way, and Sharlto Copley's brilliant performance made an unlikable character relatable.

The movie tells its story from two perspectives: the impersonal, big-picture news and the personal, on-the-ground experiences. As a young man, I focused on the action and horror. Now, I see it as a powerful story about the difference between what we see on a screen and what we experience personally.

At its core, District 9 is about perception, propaganda, and prejudice. It reminds us that while technology has made our world wider, we must actively seek personal connection to truly understand one another. The "Prawns" represent anyone we are quick to fear, and the film is a reminder to look past media-driven narratives and see people as individuals.
