A new paper by Conversano et al., very recently published in Calcified Tissue International, analysed 16,000 REMS scans to clarify how much REMS-BMD depends on age, weight and BMI.
The results show that, as expected, anthropometric parameters contribute to REMS-BMD, but they do not by themselves determine the final BMD value: a substantial part (typically over 40%) of the information remains linked to the ultrasound signal and to the bone characteristics detected during the scan.
This supports REMS as an advanced, non-ionizing technology for bone health assessment, capable of providing information that goes beyond anthropometric modelling alone
