How does the flu actually spread?

Mostly through droplets within about two metres, and from surfaces where the virus survives up to 48 hours. You are contagious from a day before symptoms start. Wash your hands for 20 seconds and stay home until you have been fever-free for 24 hours.

Feeling low, anxious or not yourself for more than two weeks?

That is the point where doctors recommend an assessment. A GP can screen for depression and anxiety and check for physical causes like thyroid problems or anaemia with a blood test. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call 112.

Never seen a doctor in Italy before? Here is what actually happens at a visit.

Your doctor takes your history, examines you and checks your vital signs. Tests, prescriptions and referrals are arranged during or right after the visit, and results are explained in English. Using travel insurance? Call your insurer first.

Brought a prescription from home? An Italian pharmacy may not be able to fill it.

Prescriptions from outside the EU generally need to be rewritten by an Italian doctor. Antibiotics always need a prescription here, and controlled medicines like strong painkillers or ADHD medication follow stricter rules, so book before you run out.

Sore after a marathon? Here is what is normal, and what is not.

Soreness peaking one to three days later is expected. Avoid ibuprofen until you are rehydrated. Dark urine, bone pain that worsens with weight or a swollen, painful calf need a doctor. Confusion or nausea after drinking lots of water can mean low sodium, so call 112.

Worried the flu vaccine will give you the flu? It cannot.

The injected vaccine contains no live virus. It is especially recommended for older adults, people with long-term conditions and during pregnancy, when antibodies also protect the baby after birth. Most people with an egg allergy can have it safely.

No family history of breast cancer? That does not mean you can skip screening.

Most women diagnosed have no close relative who had it. Risk also depends on age, genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, breast density, hormones and lifestyle. If a close relative had breast or ovarian cancer before 50, you may need earlier screening or genetic counselling.

Cold or flu? Here is how doctors tell them apart.

A cold builds over days and rarely causes fever in adults. Flu starts within hours with a fever of 38 to 40°C and aches, and a nose swab can confirm it. Antibiotics help neither, and green mucus alone does not change that. A fever that returns after you started to improve needs a doctor.
