Nell'orto abbiamo messo a dimora alcune barbatelle di Sangiovese come "riserva" per il vigneto. Se in futuro una vite dovesse morire o non svilupparsi correttamente (quelle che in viticoltura vengono chiamate fallanze), possiamo sostituirla con una pianta dello stesso vitigno già disponibile in azienda. Una barbatella è una giovane vite innestata che, una volta piantata, ha bisogno di circa tre anni prima di entrare in piena produzione e contribuire alla vendemmia. Durante questi primi anni non si punta alla produzione di uva, ma alla formazione della pianta: attraverso potature e interventi mirati viene impostata la forma di allevamento, cioè la struttura che la vite avrà da adulta e che ne determinerà lo sviluppo, l'esposizione al sole, l'arieggiamento e la qualità delle future produzioni.
We have planted some Sangiovese vine cuttings in the garden as a “reserve” for the vineyard. If, in the future, a vine were to die or fail to develop properly (what are known in viticulture as “failures”), we can replace it with a plant of the same variety already available on the farm. A vine shoot is a young grafted vine that, once planted, takes about three years to reach full production and contribute to the harvest. During these early years, the focus is not on grape production but on the plant’s development: through pruning and targeted interventions, the training system is established—that is, the structure the vine will have as an adult, which will determine its growth, sun exposure, airflow, and the quality of future harvests.
