A single-center study published in Perfusion Journal investigated the use of our Aurora head–neck cooling device during open pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA), a procedure carrying significant risk of neurological complications due to prolonged circulatory arrest.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬:
→ Cerebral desaturation events (rSO₂ < 40%) occurred in 22.2% of Aurora patients vs. 77.8% of controls (p = 0.030)
→ Postoperative NSE levels showed a favorable trend in the Aurora group
→ Dual-modality cooling, combining systemic hypothermia with targeted head–neck cooling, improved intra-operative cerebral oxygenation

These results add to the growing body of evidence supporting targeted temperature management as a neuroprotective strategy in cardiac surgery.

We are pleased to highlight results from a clinical study conducted at the Fondazione I.R.C.C.S. Policlinico San Matteo Pavia, published in Perfusion, evaluating innovative approaches to brain-targeted temperature control in patients at risk of acute brain injury.

Open pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) carries a high risk of neurological complications due to cerebral hypoperfusion and ischemia–reperfusion injury. Systemic cooling during extracorporeal circulation may not sufficiently reduce brain temperature. Combining systemic and targeted head–neck cooling may enhance neuroprotection.

Dual-modality cooling combining extracorporeal hypothermia and targeted head–neck cooling improved intraoperative cerebral oxygenation and were associated with lower postoperative NSE levels.

These results align with Neuron Guard’s mission to develop portable and precise solutions for brain protection, designed to bring early neuroprotection directly to the point of care.
