🚑 August 2026 at a glance

August was another busy month for the States of Jersey Ambulance Service, with our teams responding to 1,246 emergency and urgent care calls across the Island.

Of these incidents, 877 patients were conveyed to the Emergency Department, with the remainder being assessed, treated and discharged at scene or referred to other appropriate services and pathways of care.

Alongside our emergency and urgent care activity, our Patient Transport Service completed 1,716 journeys during August, helping patients travel safely to and from essential healthcare appointments.

Behind every number is a patient, family or member of our community who needed our support. A huge thank you to all of our colleagues across the States of Jersey Ambulance Service, the Emergency Services Control Centre and our wider teams for their continued hard work and support throughout the month.

🎓 Heading off to university this autumn?

If you’re starting university this year, it’s important to make sure you’re protected against meningococcal disease and have had your MenB vaccination before you leave.

University is an exciting new chapter, and we’d like to wish everyone from Jersey heading away to study this year the very best of luck with everything ahead! 🎓

🚑 And a special message from us…

If you’re leaving the Island to study BSc Paramedic Science or another course on your journey towards becoming a paramedic, we’d love you to keep in touch with us while you’re away.

Jersey will always need the next generation of ambulance clinicians, and we’re incredibly keen to support those developing their careers both on and off-Island and, hopefully, welcome some of you home to continue your careers with the States of Jersey Ambulance Service in the future. 💚🚑

For now, enjoy the adventure ahead — and before you start packing, make sure your vaccinations are up to date! 💉🎓

Recognising the fantastic contribution made by the volunteers of St John Ambulance Jersey 💚

Across our Island, volunteers from a range of organisations give their time, skills and experience to support our community, often working alongside the emergency services and other agencies.

We join St John Ambulance Jersey in recognising their volunteers and thanking them for the time, compassion and commitment they give to helping others.

We’re incredibly fortunate in Jersey to have so many people who volunteer their time in support of our Island community, and we extend our thanks to all those who make such a valuable contribution 👏

Behind every community event, training session and emergency response is an incredible team of volunteers who generously give their time to help others.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Some are students, some work full-time, some are retired, but they all share one thing in common: a commitment to making Jersey a safer place.

Their dedication allows us to support local events, respond to emergencies, teach lifesaving skills and provide care when people need it most.

🚑 July at a glance – Emergency & Urgent Care

During July, our teams responded to 1,194 calls across the Island.

Not every call attended by our ambulance clinicians results in a journey to the Emergency Department - out of all the calls attended, nearly 30% of patients were assessed, treated and discharged on scene.

Our clinicians assess each patient’s individual needs and, where appropriate, can provide treatment at scene or consider other suitable care pathways.

💚 Choosing the right care

Our emergency ambulance service is there for people who are seriously ill or injured, particularly where there is an immediate threat to life.

For less urgent healthcare needs, there are other options available across Jersey, including self-care, community pharmacies and your GP. The Emergency Department is also available for serious injuries and illnesses requiring urgent hospital assessment.

🚑 Please call 999 when someone is seriously ill or injured, or you believe their life may be at risk.

Choosing the most appropriate healthcare service helps ensure our emergency ambulances remain available for those who need them most.

🌒☀️ Planning to watch the solar eclipse this Wednesday?

A partial solar eclipse will be visible on Wednesday 12th August, and if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse, please make sure you do so safely. 👀

⚠️ Never look directly at the Sun. Even during an eclipse, looking directly at the Sun can cause serious and potentially permanent damage to your eyes — and the damage may occur without causing any immediate pain.

😎 Normal sunglasses are NOT safe for viewing an eclipse, no matter how dark they are.

If you’re planning to watch:

🔭 Use genuine eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.

🔎 Check eclipse glasses before use and do not use them if they are scratched, torn or damaged.

📦 Alternatively, watch indirectly using a pinhole projector or another safe projection method.

👧 Make sure children are closely supervised when viewing the eclipse and understand that they should never look directly at the Sun.

🌒 It should be a spectacular sight — enjoy it, but protect your eyes while you do!

❗Please give us as much notice as possible if you need to cancel your Patient Transport Service booking.

Our Patient Transport Service helps hundreds of patients travel to essential hospital appointments and day services across the island every week.

Unfortunately, when transport bookings are cancelled at short notice, it is often too late for us to offer that journey to another patient. This means valuable transport capacity can go unused while other patients are waiting for assistance.

So far this year, more than 1334 bookings have been cancelled at short notice - the equivalent of 3 weeks of Patient Transport Service capacity.

If your circumstances change and you no longer need transport, please let us know as soon as possible. Giving us as much notice as you can helps us make the best use of our crews and vehicles and allows us to support more patients who rely on the service.
