A food allergy is when the body's immune system reacts unusually to specific foods. Although allergic reactions are often mild, they can be very serious. Symptoms of a food allergy can affect different areas of the body at the same time.

For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not severe. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life-threatening. Food allergy symptoms usually develop within a few minutes to 2 hours after eating the offending food. Rarely, symptoms may be delayed for several hours.

The most common food allergy signs and symptoms include:

Tingling or itching in the mouth

Hives, itching or eczema

Swelling of the lips, face, tongue and throat or other parts of the body

Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing

People with asthma have inflamed airways, which are sensitive to things that may not bother other people. These things are “triggers.”

The most common asthma triggers include allergies, air pollution and other airborne irritants, other health conditions including respiratory infections, exercise or physical activity, weather and air temperature, strong emotions, and some medications.

A food allergy is an abnormal response of the body's immune system to certain foods. This is not the same as food intolerance, although some of the symptoms may be very similar.

Your body’s immune system fights off infections and other dangers to keep you healthy. When your immune system senses that a food or something in a food is a “danger” to your health, you have a food allergy reaction. Your immune system sends out immunoglobulin E or IgE antibodies. These react to the food or substance in the food. This can cause allergy symptoms such as hives, asthma, itching in the mouth, trouble breathing, stomach pains, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Asthma is a major noncommunicable disease (NCD), affecting both children and adults, and is the most common chronic disease among children. Inflammation and narrowing of the small airways in the lungs cause asthma symptoms, which can be any combination of cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

Asthma affected an estimated 262 million people in 2019 (1) and caused 455 000 deaths.

Inhaled medication can control asthma symptoms and allow people with asthma to lead a normal, active life.

Avoiding asthma triggers can also help to reduce asthma symptoms.

Most asthma-related deaths occur in low- and lower-middle-income countries, where under-diagnosis and under-treatment is a challenge.

Allergy has different diseases with varied clinical manifestations such as asthma, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, urticaria and anaphylaxis. In case of presenting these symptoms, the Allergist will evaluate if there is an allergy to any substance.

The most important tool for the diagnosis of allergic diseases is the medical history, which should include personal, family, environmental history, triggers of symptoms, lifestyle habits, etc.

The identification of allergens requires the use of complementary diagnostic tools to discover the substance responsible for the clinical picture that is being investigated.

The most used tests are skin tests that reproduce the allergic inflammatory reaction locally on the skin surface. The allergens to be tested are selected according to the patient's medical history and habitat.

You should see an allergist if:

• Your allergies are causing symptoms such as chronic sinus infections, nasal congestion or difficulty breathing.

• You are experiencing warning signs of serious asthma such as:

Asthma is a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out and shortness of breath.

For some people, asthma is a minor nuisance. For others, it can be a major problem that interferes with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack.

Asthma can't be cured, but its symptoms can be controlled.

Atopic Dermatitis.
Atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as eczema, is a common skin disease in babies, small children and some adults. Children typically develop atopic dermatitis during their first year of life and experience dry, itchy, scaly patches on their cheeks, forehead, arms and legs.

Many children or adults with atopic dermatitis have a family history of allergies including hay fever, asthma or food allergies. Exposure to certain allergens may cause symptoms to worsen. While no cure is available for AD, treatment and good skin care can offer relief of symptoms and alleviate some discomfort.
