Your Anger May Be Valid. Public Shaming Is Not the Answer.

We can be outraged, frustrated and deeply concerned about the state of our healthcare system and the treatment patients sometimes receive. We should speak up. We should demand accountability. And where care falls below an acceptable standard, there should be proper investigation.

But that does not make it acceptable to secretly record an individual healthcare worker, post their image online and invite thousands of strangers to attack them.

A short video rarely tells the whole story. We may not know why that doctor, nurse or other staff member could not help at that particular moment, what other emergency they were managing, what instructions they had been given, or what happened before the camera started recording.

Publicly identifying and targeting someone can cross the line into harassment or bullying, and depending on what is said or alleged, may also raise defamation and privacy concerns.

Hold the system accountable. Make a formal complaint. Document what happened. Ask questions. Escalate serious concerns. Seek legal advice where appropriate.

But turning an individual healthcare worker into social-media content before the facts are known does not necessarily advance the cause of better healthcare.

We can demand better healthcare without abandoning fairness, dignity and due process.

What does “reasonable care” actually look like in a hospital?

It means recognizing that healthcare workers may be caring for several patients at once, and they cannot always respond the moment a patient wants to use the bathroom or a patient expresses discomfort.

For a patient who cannot safely walk to the bathroom independently, the priority must be safety, dignity and appropriate assistance. Depending on the patient's condition, that may mean helping them to the bathroom when staff are available, providing a bedpan or urinal, using a diaper.

We cannot excuse cras, disrespectful and demeaning behaviour but we do have to begin to accept the limitations that exist.

Reasonable care does not mean that every request should be met immediately. What matters is whether the patient's needs and risks were appropriately assessed, reasonable alternatives were provided, assistance was given within the circumstances, and the patient's dignity was respected.

Good hospital care isn't about expecting perfection. It's about asking whether the care provided was reasonable, safe and appropriate in the circumstances.

There is so much that goes into creating a work environment that is conducive to producing good docotrs. One of which is respecting that docotor/medical student as a person, a clinician, a colleague. I have had some of the worst experiences with my collegues and consultants and I have also had the best. As I reflect on the and my passion to join this fight for a first world healthcare system I think we need to address the employee role and how they can help each other have a better work experience.

True leadership in healthcare isn’t about policing our staff, it’s about protecting them. Our regional health authorities operate under immense pressure, but a combative HR approach only fuels burnout and drives away our finest medical professionals. When Human Resources acts as a supportive shield, the entire healthcare system wins.By prioritizing empathy, open dialogue, and proactive welfare, HR empowers our doctors, nurses, and allied staff to focus on what they do best: saving lives. Let's champion an HR culture across Jamaica that nurtures our caregivers instead of stressing them. PeopleFirst JAHearingAndHealing

Porters are saving lives too! So many times they have to intervene to protect us from violent patients and restrain persons who are physical. I am so grateful for my likkle fren who looked out for me! God bless him.

Where or where would I be without the nurses that had my back! I am blessed to never have to know the answer to that. I had the best, most skilled, knowledgable and wonderful nurses that had my back and I had theirs. Thank you! You guys are truly incredible.

Cornwal Regional Hopsital has some of the most incredible doctors! I can't imagine what they had to go through for the past > 10 yrs, working in such a difficult environment and taking the blame for the substandard care! Big up all Jamaican doctors and big up CRH straight!

There is so much animosity building up and being played out in the public and I think things should be worked on and worked out privately. There is value in transparency but where that leads to statements that create tension we need to pull back and protect each other, there is no healthcare sector without healthcare workers so partnering to create effective change is much more valuable than bawling out and saying they are doing their jobs poorly, when in fact that can't be true without administrative failures too.

There are doctors that lack compassion in the healthcare system, but as the Employer the tools, systems and circumstances need to be provided for employees to do their job well. This needs to be addressed first. Then the task of identifying and separating the unethical and unfeeling doctors from the burnt out frustrasted, ones that are exisitng in survival/aquiscense mode, can be undertaken.

JMDA is Restive.... again. Is this greed or is this justified? It doesn't seem right to me to defend fair wages for our MPs and then deem everyone else greedy, money grabbing and unconscionable. If we want wages to be fair for those at the top, it should apply to every tier below too.
