Exercise Your Right to Bare Arms

Looking at Hollywood's red carpet, you can tell the stars are all about developing and toning their upper arms. Even first lady Michelle Obama proudly shows her fantastic biceps regularly. Buff arms can be yours too! What you need is a move that will make what I call the "belly" of the biceps really pop! Ready? Get in the right mind-set — it's time to concentrate!

Concentration Curls
For this move, hold a dumbbell in your right hand and sit on the edge of a bench or a chair with your feet a few inches wider than your hips. Lean forward from your hips, and place your right elbow against the inside of your right thigh, just behind your knee. The weight should hang down near the inside of your ankle.
Place your left palm on top of your left thigh. Exhale and bend your right arm, curling the dumbbell three-quarters of the way up toward your shoulder. Hold for a beat, then inhale slowly, lowering the weight, and repeat. Do a complete set (10 to 15 reps) on one arm, then switch to the other.
The concentration curl really helps isolate the biceps by taking any assistance from the back and shoulders totally out of the equation. Be careful not to cheat by leaning back for help when you are lifting the weight.

MYTH: Raw Veggies Are More Nutritious Than Cooked

When it comes to eating vegetables, do you boil, steam, blanch or just eat them raw? There are various reports out there that cooking vegetables causes them to lose their nutrients and that to get the most from your vegetables, you should eat them raw. Others say that's nonsense. Not sure which side to take on this veggie debate? Let me explain.

The Truth: It's complicated.

This nutrition myth isn’t so easy to break down into fact or fiction — the truth really depends on what type of vegetables you’re eating. I’ll outline both arguments, and help you decide how to prepare your daily dose of veggies. Take notes!

Don’t let raw foodies brainwash you. Yes, it is true that cooking vegetables can potentially destroy some of their vitamin content, but some of the other claims by raw-food devotees aren’t true. Some raw-food experts claim that raw veggies have more enzymes than cooked ones, but registered dietitians have stated that while heating foods above 188 degrees can deactivate certain plant enzymes, those enzymes that are lost are actually made to support the survival of plants — and are not essential to human health.

Cooking vegetables makes them easier to digest. Some people have a hard time breaking down raw vegetables in their gastrointestinal tract. Lightly cooking vegetables helps to break down the plants’ cell walls, making them easier to digest. If cooking your vegetables makes them easier for you to consume — by all means, cook away.

Cooking certain vegetables actually helps to boost their nutritional content. A great example of this is what happens when you cook tomatoes. Cooking tomatoes boosts their amount of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that is believed to fight a variety of cancers (including prostate, colorectal, pancreatic, breast, lung, and endometrial). Another source of proof, a 2007 study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that while boiling and steaming carrots, zucchini, and broccoli maintained their antioxidant compounds – steaming broccoli actually increased its content of glucosinolates, a group of plant compounds touted for their cancer-fighting abilities.

Don’t be afraid of the microwave. Many people think microwaving vegetables zaps all the nutritional benefits out of them. Think again. Much like steaming, microwaving veggies helps to preserve certain nutrients — in broccoli's case, it preserves 90 percent of its vitamin C content. Be sure to avoid overcooking broccoli and other cruciferous veggies (like brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, bok choy and others), though, because it could cause them to lose nutrients. You’ll know they’re overcooked when they’re mushy and start to stink. I like mine crunchy, like they’re raw, so I blanch my cruciferous veggies by throwing them into a pot of boiling water for two minutes, draining quickly, and then rinsing with ice-cold water. Give it a try if you like that “snap,” too.

The Bottom Line: We don’t eat nearly enough vegetables as we all should, so I’m certainly not going to yell at you if you are eating them, but choose to boil instead of blanch — or eat them raw. Just strive for five fruits and veggies each day and keep these prep facts in mind!

MYTH: Hot Workouts Burn More Calories

Thinking about taking a class — from Bikram yoga to hot Pilates — in a sauna-like studio? Before you sign up to work out in a 105-degree room, find out what you need to know about this popular trend.

The Truth: Working out in hot temperatures does not help you burn more calories or detox your body.

There is always some fitness craze that everyone feels like they HAVE to try, and lately it seems like the focus is more and more on “hot” workouts. Believe me, I’ll try anything that seems like a good way to burn more calories faster, but this just isn’t the ticket. These hot workouts may seem like a cool challenge for you to try, but they can actually do more harm than good to your body.

The key to weight loss is to heat the body from the inside out, not the outside in. Sweating caused by your body exerting a lot of energy versus sweating caused by a hot temperature outside are two very different things. When it comes to exercise, you want to heat your body from the inside out by exercising at a high intensity and working out at your maximum heart rate. Adding heat from the environment offers no benefits to your body.

Working out in the heat could be harmful to your body. You’re actually dehydrating your body, and you could suffer from severe health consequences. A lot of people say exercising in the heat allows them to become more flexible — but this is one dangerous way to increase flexibility! You become flexible by training and stretching, not by jacking up the temp. Heat can make you feel more flexible than you actually are, causing you to stretch farther than is safe and injure yourself.

Intense sweating is NOT a form of “detox.” Sweating a lot during a workout DOES NOT mean you’re burning more calories — or detoxing your body. Detoxing is primarily the job of your kidneys and the liver helps as well in that process. I
ntensity training is the best way to burn the maximum amount of calories. So take off those sweatshirts or trash bags you may go running in or wear to your classes to sweat, thinking they’ll help you release toxins. They’re not helping you — it’s water weight that comes off…and comes right back on!

The Bottom Line: Work out in a cool climate, boost your intensity, and drink more water to aid in detoxing by supporting your kidneys.
