ASTECC Launches Spa Wellness Coaching Course

Training and education provider ASTECC has introduced wellness coaching for estheticians, massage therapists and other holistic healers. Spa Wellness Coaching is 12-week curriculum that covers hydrotherapy, thalassotherapy, constitutional body typing, transdermal nutrition and stress management techniques. Participants will learn how to deliver individualized client programs online, in addition to practical skills that will help them build their own coaching business. Weekly Zoom calls support practitioners’ progress thoughout the coaching development process.

Spa Wellness Coaching was created by Leah Carver, daughter of ASTECC founder and renowned spa educator Anne Bramham. After 20 years in the spa industry—during which time she has delivered advanced education, owned and operated spa and yoga studio, authored a book, launched a podcast and hosted retreats—Carver now aims to help entrepreneurs build their businesses. She identified the niche for spa wellness coaching in 2018 while reviewing the content for The Feel Good Summit, a three-day immersive health experience.

“The Summit was offering nutrition, fitness and other coaching angles, but what was clearly missing to me was spa,” saiys Carver. “I began to work with my clients online to help them develop practices and lifestyle and business that would support their well-being.”

The first 12-week course launched April 20, 2020, with 24 students. Sixty percent of course participants moved onto a six-month Program Development Mastermind Course. The second course is wrapping up, and the third began on July 22.

“With the way our lives have all changed and the uncertainty of the future regarding Covid-19 and massage, I realized this was a wonderful opportunity to gain more knowledge in helping provide clients with support at home. I now have numerous new tools to add to my tool belt to help provide a coaching program at home,” says Heather Bennett, a student in April’s class.

ASTECC originally planned to release the Spa Wellness Coaching course in 2021, but decided to fast-track it given the current climate.

“Completing the Spa Wellness Coaching course gives practitioners the tools to help people with health and personal issues during these challenging times. I believe this is essential to bring forth in this time,” says Carver. “The body responds to life’s events—it is our unwritten diary. The path to wellness begins with embracing the body’s messages.”

Shou Sugi Ban House Introduces Culinary Retreats

Luxury wellness retreat Shou Sugi Ban House in Water Mill, New York, has announced a series of new culinary retreats led by chef Mads Refslund, cofounder of Noma in Copenhagen, four-time winner of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants and two-time Michelin star recipient. Refslund leads Shou Sugi Ban House’s innovative, plant-rich culinary program and designs its seasonal menus.

The “Of Land and Sea: A Culinary Immersion” retreats will take place Thursday, September 17, through Sunday, September 20; and Friday, October 9, through Monday, October 12. Participants will receive accommodations in a private guest studio with fireplace, soaking tub and garden patio; daily plant-rich meals; and numerous wellness activities. Additional programming, plus spa and healing treatments are available at an additional cost.

The culinary retreats will incorporate cooking demonstrations, workshops and excursions combined with the resort’s signature wellness programming, including morning yoga and beach walks. Each weekend will start with an introduction to Shou Sugi Ban House’s culinary philosophy and dinner, followed by a cacao ceremony before guests return to their private studios for a seasonal soak. Other itinerary highlights include a foraging excursion, microgreens workshop, picnic lunch, sound bath, fireside conversations and live music.

Shou Sugi Ban House’s culinary philosophy is born from the belief that true health is grounded in nature and food is medicine. Along with a resident nutritionist, chef Refslund creates balanced and hyper-seasonal menus that are inventive, locally sourced and designed to cleanse, heal and sustain guests throughout their stay. The culinary team selects the finest organic foods based on collaborations with local growers and purveyors, as well as integrating an abundance of herbs and greens grown in on-site biodynamic gardens.

Four Seasons Delivers “Good Vibrations” with Sound Therapy Offerings

The Spa at Four Seasons Resort Orlando is delivering restorative experiences for guests, thanks to Vibrational Sound Therapy (50 min./$190; 80 min./$270). The treatments, which involve the use of Himalayan singing bowls, are aimed at cleansing the spirit of negative energy and emotions to help improve health and healing—especially important as the hotel reopens after closure due to the pandemic.

“Sound therapy works through the ears first, then to the brain to quiet your mind and bring about a meditative state,” says the resort’s master spa therapist Stephany Collins.

During the bespoke experience, the singing bowls are placed on and around the client’s body. The bowls’ vibrations combine with the therapist’s fluid massage techniques to release stress and harmonize the body and mind.

“This service has been very popular since its introduction,” says Derek Hofmann, senior director of The Spa. “We can audibly hear a change in the energy exchange that passes between the bowl and body, and work to clear areas of stagnant stress, muscular adhesion or chakra imbalance.”

Spa-goers at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando can also indulge in a number of indoor and outdoor relaxation lounges, outdoor whirlpool, solarium room and other wellness-enhancing treatments like cupping, intentional aromatherapy and sleep ritual massage.

Wellness Tourism Association Reveals Key Wellness Vacation Motivations

In an effort to support the recovery of the wellness tourism industry, the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) surveyed nearly 4,000 consumers from 48 countries and territories to discover their motivations for taking wellness vacations as the industry begins to recover.

The online consumer survey was administered from April 2020 through June 2020 in collaboration with WTA member Danny Kessler, PhD, of Youngsan University in Busan, South Korea. Respondents were 54% female, with 73% between the ages 26 to 74, and close to 78% indicated that they already include wellness activities when they travel.

The survey drew a total of 3,931 responses from 48 countries and territories, with 80% from North America. It included 77 questions related to motivations, quality of life, subjective well-being, along with basic demographics.

The survey asked two questions:

When it comes time to book a Wellness Vacation/Holiday, what would be your main motivations?

As a result of COVID-19 affecting your life, what are some new motivations for going on a Wellness Vacation not mentioned in previous questions.

From question 1, here are respondents’ top eight most important motivations for booking a wellness vacation (figures are rounded off to the closest percentages point and indicate the number of respondents who selected the statement as the Most Important).

To return to everyday life feeling rejuvenated – 38%

To escape the demands of everyday life – 26%

To experience activities outdoors – 25%

To look and feel better – 24%

To connect with nature – 24%

To find peace and quiet – 21%

To get a better night’s sleep – 17%

To learn general ways to improve my health – 17%

From question 2, which allowed respondents to describe any other personal motivations for taking a wellness vacation in the wake of the pandemic, the top four themes were:

Social connection and the desire to be with like-minded people

The desire to be in nature

To improve mental health

To learn to be proactive about their own health, wellness and well-being (wellness relating to health, well-being relating to happiness)

Other notable results were that more than 20% of respondents said they’d be extremely likely to book a wellness vacation within the next two years, and more than 24% indicated that wellness “could” or “will” be the focus of their next trip.

“When compared to the 2018 survey with 2,500-plus respondents, the 2020 survey reinforces the importance of nature/the outdoors as a key pillar of wellness vacations,” notes Anne Dimon, WTA president and CEO. “As the industry begins to recover, we know the results of this survey will provide both suppliers and travel advisors with crucial consumer data on motivations for wellness vacations post-pandemic.”

A full and complete analyses of the survey will be released later this year. For more information contact the WTA at [email protected].

About Wellness Tourism Association (WTA): The Wellness Tourism Association is a nonprofit company incorporated in the U.S., with a mission to support and further the development of the wellness tourism industry for the global good. Miraval Opens Largest Life In Balance Spa in Lenox

Hyatt Hotels has opened two properties in the Berkshires—Miraval Berkshires and the Wyndhurst Manor & Club. The two travel destinations opened right next to one another in Lenox, Massachusetts, and Miraval Berkshires houses the brand’s largest Life in Balance Spa.

Miraval Berkshires is the brand’s first East Coast location, and the Life in Balance Spa spans 29,000 square feet with 28 treatment rooms, built with Miraval’s most beloved signature treatments in mind. Standouts include a dedicated indoor spa pool treatment room for the Miraval signature Vasudhara water treatment; and a new room for Naga Thai—the brand’s exclusive massage developed from Thai healing principles—containing special support beams for therapists’ yoga silks. The spa also features an indoor/outdoor lounge pool, men’s and women’s relaxation rooms, salon, sauna, steam room and retail boutique.

In addition to the spa’s classic treatments, Miraval Berkshires’ menu includes new offerings, like the Manuka Honey Body Renewal Ritual and Abundant Harvest Facial, developed in collaboration with Naturopathica. The spa menu also features locally inspired treatments rooted in the Berkshires’ sense of place via the use of indigenous botanicals. Facials such as the Tulsi Rose and the Abundant Harvest include recipes with organic, regional plants that are often grown on the property, allowing guests to rejuvenate through the harvests of the Berkshires.

The spa design was conceived to excite all five senses and encourage mindfulness and introspection. The guest experience begins with the “Path to Wellness,” a meditative walk through a greenhouse-like portal designed to transition guests into a more serene state of being.

“We are thrilled with the Miraval brand’s expansion to the East Coast with Miraval Berkshires and to welcome Wyndhurst Manor & Club to the Destinations Hotels family,” said Susan Santiago, head of lifestyle & Miraval operations. “The programming at Miraval Berkshires encourages guests to create a ‘Life in Balance’ by focusing on mind, body and spirit. We look forward to welcoming guests on their transformative journey through spa, equine, fitness and nutrition experiences.”

Bioelements Exceeds Tree Planting Goal

We can all breathe a little easier, as Bioelements has exceeded its tree planting goal with sales of its Undo Cleanser.

The company partnered with reforestation organization One Tree Planted to aid in the fight against pollution. Since the launch of Bioelements Undo Cleanser, every purchase has gone toward planting a tree to create a forest.

The sales allowed for more than 600 trees to be planted and over 30,000 pounds of carbon to be removed from the atmosphere. Each tree planted removes 48 pounds of CO2 each year, so every new tree planted does make a difference.

“We really appreciate this partnership, and it’s great to know that brands like Bioelements are taking a stand for sustainability by planting trees,” says Diana Chaplin, canopy director of One Tree Planted. “Customers like knowing that their everyday products are making an impact, and nature benefits through ecological restoration.”
