Having a little sugar here and there isn’t a big problem if you’re active and metabolically healthy. But today, in tandem with soaring rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes, the food supply has become awash in added sugar which goes by many names: sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, to name a few. 🥵
-
This is bad for a number of reasons but primarily, because we consume too many calories as it is (hence our ever expanding waistlines), there’s absolutely no reason we should be adding empty calories from added sugar to our diets.
-
Your average person now consumes 66 lbs of added sugar per year. That’s a lot and it’s partly due to the fact that it’s now hidden everywhere. If you had a very high maintenance calorie level (say, you were a bodybuilder), then having some added sugar would be no big deal. But unfortunately it has displaced real food calories causing us to become overfed and undernourished.
-
These foods are also dangerous because the added sugar (and lets be honest, fat) makes them hyper palatable. They’re hard to resist! So we are prone to overeating them. While it’s fine to treat yourself, it’s also important to face the fact that most instant oatmeal is better classified as desert than a real breakfast food.
