Paro, Bhutan. Half way up is a cafeteria with great views of Tiger’s Nest, but it pales in comparison to the view from the top and the experience of visiting the 8 temples. I met a group of ladies coming down when I was going up. They only went to the cafeteria, saying their legs were too weak to continue up. This made me sad for them, coming all this way to Bhutan only to stop 45 minutes before reaching the top. My yoga and Pilates practices keeps my legs, core and upper body trekking-ready, ski-ready, daily-functional-movement-ready. I don’t prep for a trek. I practice daily - so I’m just ready for whatever life’s experience is before me. I don’t get out of shape then back into shape. It’s a way of life, and when I’m 78-years-old like the ladies I met, I will summit the mountain, I will zip down powder-covered slopes, and I will move and challenge my body and mind daily. Join me tru-yoga.com. Make the practice part of your life - so you can embrace and enjoy all that life brings. Thank you for the wonderful day even though we got caught in the rain on the way down!

Lama Gyembo Dorji patiently sat with me and answered my endless questions regarding this fascinating 3 years 3 months Losum Chochum retreat that monks choose to embark on once their studies are completed.
I got a glimpse into the secret lives of the monks during this time and I’m sharing it here with you!
1. Monk enters the small hut where he will spend the next 3 years 3 months in isolation. Not seeing nor speaking with others, not hearing nor uttering any sounds himself.

2. Monk sits in lotus in a small space that is outlined by wooden slats - the space is just big enough for him to fit inside.

3. Monk will sit in meditation from 1230h-0800h. No movement. No audible sound (no singing etc)

4. Break. Toilet. Drink. Eat food left by family members.

5. Resume sitting 1300-1800h

6. Rest until 1230h. Do absolutely nothing but sit. No exercise, no walking, etc. Can sit again if monk needs to finish more of the teachings.

REPEAT Schedule daily for 18 months
At end of 18 months monks chooses to repeat the exact same schedule, or to do Yoga for the next 18 months.
A yoga master will lead the monk. The practice is not shared with the lay people. These Tibetan yoga systems (Tsa Lung - winds and channels) - and the 6 Yogas of Naropa and Niguma- consist of numerous breath-linked movements or sequences (25 sets of Niguma Yoga) integrated with meditation to manipulate inner energy and not just individual asanas.
Lama Gyembo explained how monks are able to control the breath so much that they levitate - and they must learn to control landing back down with control. He explained how flexible he became and how his body contorted in ways unimaginable before and after the 18 months.
However much he wished to show me some of the poses, he was not allowed.
Thank you Lama Gyembo for all you do to support the young monks, to educate them and to improve the condition of this historic and beautiful monastery perched at the top of the mountain overlooking the Paro valley below. Thank you for your gift of the medicine balls and sharing your retreat experience as well as your experience with the ancient relics!

Going against doctor’s orders, Big Lama Basokab, as he’s affectionately known, insisted on making his annual visit to Phajoding Monastery during the first day of the holy month despite his fragile state at 100-years-old. So the King of Bhutan sent his personal chopper to send Big Lama to the monastery. It was karmic good luck as I was finishing day 4 of my Druk Trek the day before, and I climbed to the top of a cliff to visit with the nuns at Thugidra nunnery. I chatted with a monks who was there. He explained to me that the next day marked the start of the holy month, when many would do a 17-day retreat with him - fasting one day alternating with just one meal the next. To gain merit as a Buddhist. He mentioned that one of the biggest and most important lamas would be arriving the next day to the monastery I’d be passing by and teaching yoga to some young monks. I was thrilled and couldn’t believe the perfect timing. And so many taught yoga then stood excitedly with the young monks as we waited for the Lama to arrive. The chopper landed right in front of the sprawling monastery and the doubled-over monks was helped out of the chopper. There was much fanfare and music as he was escorted up the steps. A teacher at the Royal Academy guided me into the temple, managed to get me a white silk scarf and I was able to get that blessed as well as my beads from Lama Kipchu. Big Lama Basokab kissed my beads, I kissed his hands and we met forehead to forehead. It was one of the most moving and touching experiences of my life. I felt his goodness and holiness. Stayed for the ritual which involved 15 blessings they gave to all who were present - in the form of drinks, fruit, money, candy, etc. An amazing and blessed day! Grateful.

Kind Lama Kipchu of Jela monastery, built by the unifier of Bhutan, accepted me as his personal student and has taken on the responsibility of guiding and supporting me in my growth. Yoga is not just about the asanas / physical poses. It is so much more and so much deeper. Chanting in prayer deepens Dharana - concentration - on the path towards Enlightenment. Thank you Lama Kipchu!

Day one of Druk Trek ends at the Jela monastery, established by the unifier of Bhutan. Such great luck that as I summited, a group of monks were departing after being blessed by Lama Kipchu Tshering. They were silly and fun and excited to do some yoga.
