Eisei-en Bonsai Garden is currently in the process of relocating to Kyoto, Japan. Owner Bjorn L Bjorholm is a Nippon Bonsai Association certified bonsai professional who spent six years as an apprentice under Master Keiichi Fujikawa at Kouka-en in Osaka, Japan. Following certification, Bjorn continued to work as artist-in-residence at Kouka-en for three years, making him the first and only foreign-born full-time working bonsai professional in Japan at the time.

This remarkable maple spent the first decades of its life as a traditional Japanese Maple before being approach-grafted with Shishigashira foliage. Although it presently exhibits a somewhat rigid and formal structure, careful pruning, along with time and patience, will gradually soften its character as the canopy matures, expands, and develops greater refinement.

Styling an Ume from Scratch
In this episode, we take an in-depth look at the process of styling an Ume bonsai starting from completely untouched raw material, guiding the tree through the first critical stages of its transformation with the long-term vision of one day exhibiting it at the prestigious Kokufu-ten. From the initial assessment of the tree’s structure and potential, we explore the artistic and horticultural decisions that shape its future design. Learn how thoughtful structural pruning establishes movement, balance, and taper, how careful wiring refines the branch framework and directs future growth, and how patient long-term development is essential in creating a refined bonsai worthy of exhibition. At Eisei-en Kyoto, we are constantly striving to expand the boundaries of our knowledge in bonsai art and horticulture. Part of that pursuit involves experimenting with different fertilization products and regimens to better understand how they affect the health, vigor, and refinement of our trees.
