Hamanasu grows in sandy soil and sea winds, blooming in vivid magenta during the short northern summer. At DI SER, we cultivate Hamanasu on our own farm in Hokkaido and pick each flower by hand in the early morning, when its scent is at its richest. The freshly picked flowers are immediately taken to the distillery on the farm, where they are distilled under low-temperature, reduced-pressure conditions without the addition of any external water. This distillation method yields essential oil, cellular water, and dried petals simultaneously.
Hamanasu is designated as the flower of Hokkaido and is deeply connected to its coastal landscape. Its scent carries not only floral richness, but also green vegetation, earth, sea wind, and a subtly animalic presence.
In Hana no Oto, we use this complex scent as it is, making it the core of the entire fragrance. Through Hamanasu, we express not only the purity of Hokkaido, but also the vitality of a flower blooming amid a harsh natural environment and the quiet radiance of its short summer.
Hamanasu's olfaction is a retort to an ephemeral summer, where sand, salt and wind could have truncated it.
Listen: hamanasu offers its best conversation at dawn, when depth emanates from green, earth, and the animal note beneath the flower.
Most roses are cleaned of this.
We keep it.
