CHRONIC COUGH.
A chronic cough is not always infection.
Many people take antibiotics again and again for cough, yet the cough keeps returning.
Why does this happen.
Because many chronic coughs are not caused by bacteria.
A chronic cough in adults is usually defined as a cough lasting more than 8 weeks and for Children is more than 4 weeks. At that point, it should be evaluated instead of repeatedly treated blindly. (American Lung Association)
Common hidden causes include:
• Post-nasal drip
This means mucus from the nose or sinuses drips into the throat or at the back throat and triggers cough.
• Asthma
Some people do not wheeze. Their main asthma symptom is cough, especially at night or after cold air.
• Acid reflux
Stomach acid can irritate the throat and airway, causing cough even without heartburn.
• ACE-inhibitor blood pressure medicines
Medicines like lisinopril or enalapril can cause a dry persistent cough.
• Smoking or air pollution
The airway becomes chronically irritated.
How do you manage this;
Management depends on the cause:
• treat allergies and sinus drainage
• avoid smoke and dust exposure
• control reflux by avoiding late meals
• review blood pressure medicines
• assess for asthma if cough is worse at night
• avoid unnecessary antibiotics unless bacterial infection is likely
Seek medical care quickly if cough comes with coughing blood, shortness of breath, fever, wheezing, fainting, weight loss, ankle swelling, or thick green-yellow phlegm. (Mayo Clinic)
I want you to remember that a cough is not the diagnosis.
A cough is the body’s alarm system.
The wise thing is not just to silence the alarm, but to find what triggered.
