⚡ Could electricity speed up recovery from injuries and disease?

A groundbreaking study from Trinity College Dublin shows it just might. Scientists have discovered that gentle electrical stimulation can “reprogram” human immune cells into a healing mode.

The focus was on macrophages — immune cells that usually fight infections and repair tissues, but can also cause harmful inflammation when overactive. By exposing patient-derived macrophages to carefully controlled electrical currents in a special bioreactor, researchers triggered them to:

Researchers examined nearly 2,000 adults without a history of dementia or stroke and found that oversleeping led to challenges with memory, spatial awareness, and tasks requiring focus and planning. The effects were particularly pronounced in individuals showing depressive symptoms, regardless of medication. Even those without depression experienced some decline in brain performance due to excessive sleep, though to a lesser extent.

A corneal ulcer is basically an open sore or wound that develops on the cornea, which is the clear, protective outer layer of your eye covering the colored iris and the pupil. This sore usually happens because of an infection—caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites—that damages the cornea. Sometimes, a corneal ulcer can also form after an injury, like a scratch or if a foreign object gets stuck in the eye.

Certain habits and conditions increase the risk of developing these ulcers. For example, wearing contact lenses for too long without proper cleaning or taking breaks can create the perfect environment for infections. Poor eye hygiene and having a weakened immune system, due to illnesses or medications, can also make your eyes more vulnerable.

If you develop a corneal ulcer, you’ll probably notice symptoms like eye pain, redness, excessive tearing, blurry vision, and a strong sensitivity to light. It might also feel like something is stuck in your eye, making it very uncomfortable. Because the cornea is so important for focusing your vision, any damage to it can seriously affect how well you see.

A new stem cell procedure just reversed Type 1 diabetes in a patient, marking a major medical milestone:

Researchers used the woman’s own cells, reprogramming them into insulin-producing stem cells.

As a result, she began producing insulin naturally for the first time since developing the condition. This breakthrough offers new hope for millions with Type 1 diabetes, who currently depend on insulin therapy to manage their blood sugar levels.

The study involved three patients with Type 1 diabetes. Scientists extracted cells from each patient, converted them into stem cells capable of transforming into any cell type, and chemically reprogrammed them into insulin-producing cells.

These newly created cells were then placed inside the patients’ stomachs, where they began producing insulin. While it’s early days, the success with the first patient suggests a future where Type 1 diabetics may no longer need insulin injections to survive.
