If you speak to any special needs parent(s) at least each of them will give you an instance when they felt that their children were not included. It's heartbreaking really. Before I was a special needs parent I was ignorant on the challenges faced by special needs children and their families. But now that I am enlightened let me share with you a few tips.
1. Special needs children are the most loving people once you get to know them
2.Learn more about the child, special needs parents appreciate the fact that someone cares
3. If the child visits you, try to make the physical environment accessible for them e.g remove coffee tables, flower vases, easy to break items etc make the visit enjoyable
4. Avoid assumptions at all costs; just because one special needs child acts one way does not mean that its true for all
5. Mind your words even with the child because most really understand what is going on. Be sensitive.
6. Involve your own children because the more typical children interact with special needs children they more they see them as individuals.
I challenge you to promote or advocate for inclusion within your community in 2020 and beyond.
