Today, Kenya joined the world in commemorating World No To***co Day 2026 under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Ni****ne and To***co Addiction.”

To***co and ni****ne products continue to pose a serious public health threat, particularly among young people who are increasingly targeted through flavored products, attractive packaging, and misleading marketing.

In Kenya, to***co use remains a major concern, contributing to approximately 12,000 deaths annually. While the country has made significant progress, emerging ni****ne products such as vapes, e-cigarettes, and ni****ne pouches present new challenges that require stronger action and vigilance.

The Government of Kenya has put in place strong to***co control measures including the To***co Control Act (2007), smoke-free public spaces, graphic health warnings, advertising and promotion bans, increased taxation, sustained public awareness campaigns, and the to***co-free farms initiative. These efforts are being reinforced through stricter enforcement against illicit trade and sales to minors, a multi-sectoral taskforce on emerging ni****ne products, and ongoing legal reforms through the proposed To***co Control Amendment Bill (2024) to regulate new ni****ne products and strengthen penalties.

The Government remains committed to protecting children and youth from ni****ne addiction and safeguarding public health.

Together, let us build a healthier, to***co-free Kenya.

Dr. Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo, WHO Country Representative, has raised concern over the increasing targeting of young people with emerging ni****ne products, including within school environments. She emphasized the need to protect children and youth through stronger awareness, safe environments, cessation support for users, and robust laws that keep pace with evolving ni****ne products and marketing tactics. Together, we must safeguard the next generation from ni****ne addiction.

Kenya has strengthened preparedness measures against Ebola and other emerging public health threats at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), the country’s busiest port of entry, to enhance early detection, response capacity, and overall public health security.

Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, conducted an assessment visit to JKIA to review the effectiveness of Port Health Services and evaluate ongoing preparedness interventions.

The assessment covered key systems including passenger screening procedures, thermal scanners, isolation facilities, laboratory readiness, aircraft and wastewater surveillance, and emergency response coordination mechanisms. The Principal Secretary commended frontline health personnel for their continued commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of the public.

Although Kenya has no confirmed Ebola cases, she noted that preparedness continues to be reinforced through enhanced screening at points of entry, deployment of additional health officers, strengthened laboratory diagnostic capacity, faster specimen processing, improved surveillance across air, sea, and land borders, and sustained readiness of rapid response teams.

She further urged the public to remain vigilant, observe proper hand hygiene, seek medical attention when unwell, and rely on official Ministry of Health communication channels for accurate and timely information, emphasizing that preparedness, vigilance, and coordinated action remain Kenya’s strongest defence against Ebola and other emerging public health threats.
