Celebrating Nurses and Midwives Excellence during the Nurses Week Climax

Today, the Carnival Grounds in Nairobi transformed into a hub of honor and celebration as we marked the grand climax of Nurses Week.

This momentous occasion, jointly organized by the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) and the Kenya Progressive Nurses Association (KPNA), brought together the heartbeat of our healthcare system.

The event was bolstered by the presence of the Nursing Council of Kenya and esteemed partners, including the J&J Foundation and the Nurses and Midwives Association, all united under a theme that underscores the vital role of nursing in achieving global health security and equity.

The event was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, and Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, alongside the General Secretary of the Kenya National Union of Nurses, Hon. Seth Hon. Seth Kuka Panyako and other distinguished leaders in the health profession.

In a powerful show of solidarity, the CS and PS took the stage to recognize the tireless dedication, skill, and compassion that our Nurses and Midwives bring to every corner of this nation.

To ensure the profession's voice is heard at the highest levels of policy-making, the Cabinet Secretary announced a landmark commitment, the establishment of a stand-alone Directorate of Nurses within the Ministry of Health.

Turning to the critical issue of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff, Hon. Aden Duale delivered long-awaited news that sparked hope across the fraternity. He confirmed that UHC contracts have been extended to June 2026. More importantly, he assured the public that the budget is already being prepared to facilitate a seamless transition starting July 1st 2026, where all UHC Nurses will be absorbed by County Governments with full resource backing.

To ensure transparency, the Ministry will soon publish the names of UHC Nurses who have served since the COVID-19 pandemic to guarantee their transition into Permanent and Pensionable positions.

The Cabinet Secretary also took a moment to pass warm greetings from H.E. President William Samoei Ruto reaffirming the government's recognition of nurses as the primary pillars of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Today wasn't just a celebration of a week's end, it was a firm commitment to the dignity, career progression, and welfare of the Kenyan nurse.

Together, we are building a healthcare system where those who care for us are equally cared for.

International Nurses Week 2026 - Siaya County Celebrations

Last week, the Nurses Union, in collaboration with the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK) and facility leadership across Siaya County, successfully marked International Nurses Week 2026 . This year's commemoration honored the unwavering commitment of nurses and midwives as the backbone of Kenya's healthcare system. Celebrations were held at Siaya County Referral Hospital, Bondo Sub-County Hospital, Ambira Sub-County Hospital, Bama Private Hospital, Ramula Health Center, Rwambwa Sub-County Hospital, and other facilities where activities continue to impact communities.

Across the county, nurses led high-impact services that directly touched lives. Key activities included Mama Health Talks to empower mothers on maternal and child wellness, immunization drives to safeguard children and families, community outreaches that extended care beyond hospital walls, and cervical, breast, and prostate cancer screenings to promote early detection and save lives. These initiatives reflect the theme of this year's celebration, advancing health for all through compassionate, skilled, and accessible nursing care.

The week also celebrated excellence within our ranks. Outstanding nurses from participating facilities were recognized and awarded for exemplary service, innovation, and leadership in patient care. KNUNM Siaya Branch leadership, working hand in hand with NNAK and supportive facility heads, ensured seamless coordination of all events. To every nurse and midwife in Siaya and across Kenya, thank you.

Your dedication heals, your courage inspires, and your service transforms lives.

Happy International Nurses Week to all Nurses and Midwives across the Country!
