KMTC Wajir Students Support Madaraka Day Celebrations with Emergency Response Services

Students from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Wajir Campus played a key role during the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations in Wajir County by providing first aid and emergency response services throughout the event presided over by H.E. President Dr. William Ruto.

As part of activities leading up to the celebrations, KMTC Wajir students also showcased various clinical skills at the College’s exhibition booth. The demonstrations gave members of the public an opportunity to interact with students and learn more about the practical training offered at the College.

Deployed across the venue, the students provided immediate medical assistance to attendees, demonstrating the practical skills and professionalism acquired through their training. Their participation contributed to the success of the national celebration while offering valuable hands-on experience in emergency and patient care.

The celebrations also marked a major milestone for healthcare training in the region, following the President's official opening of the Wajir Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The state-of-the-art facility is expected to serve as a key clinical training centre for KMTC Wajir Campus students, providing expanded opportunities for practical learning, clinical placements, and exposure to a wide range of medical cases.

The hospital’s proximity to the campus is set to strengthen the integration of classroom learning and clinical practice, enhancing students’ competencies and preparedness for service in the healthcare sector.

KMTC Board Chairperson Mr. Joseah K. Cheruiyot, CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch, and Deputy Director, Finance, Planning and Administration Ms. Lucy Chebungei joined the President and other leaders in marking the celebrations at Wajir Stadium on June 1, 2026.

Later in the day, the College leadership engaged with staff and students of KMTC Wajir to discuss issues affecting the campus and assured them of continued support.

The team also inspected the ongoing construction of a students’ hostel being developed through a partnership between KMTC and the Boma Yangu Affordable Housing Project. Once completed, the facility is expected to increase accommodation capacity and improve student welfare.

KMTC remains committed to strengthening training infrastructure, expanding learning opportunities, and equipping students with the practical skills required to support healthcare delivery across Kenya.

Manza Campus Radiography and Imaging Students Mark Mental Health Awareness Month

Students from the Radiography and Imaging Department at Manza Campus marked Mental Health Awareness Month on May 29, 2026, with a day of fun-filled activities to promote mental wellness and remind learners of the importance of taking care of their mental health.

The initiative, organised by the students with support from Campus Management, provided a platform to raise awareness about the mental health challenges many young people face today, including stress, anxiety, depression, grief, financial pressures, and academic demands.

The day featured a five-kilometre walk, rope skipping, bano, kati, and other games that not only encouraged physical activity but also rekindled cherished childhood memories. Laughter, teamwork, and friendly competition filled the atmosphere as students took time to unwind and connect with one another.

The Campus Principal, Ms. Winfred Nguih, noted that mental health concerns continue to affect many young people and called on students to embrace a culture of openness and support.

"Many young people today are silently struggling with different challenges. We encourage our students to talk about what they are going through and seek help whenever they need it. A problem shared is a problem half solved," she said.

Ms. Nguih assured learners that KMTC remains committed to supporting their well-being, noting that success in education goes beyond academic performance.

"Our responsibility is not only to train competent healthcare professionals but also to nurture healthy, resilient individuals who are able to thrive both professionally and personally. Your mental and emotional well-being matters to us," she added.

To encourage students to take a break from their busy schedules and focus on their well-being, the Head of Department, Ms. Vivian Ochiel, organised a variety of recreational activities that brought students together in a relaxed and engaging environment.

Speaking during the event, Ms. Ochiel emphasised that mental wellness is an important part of students' overall health and plays a significant role in their academic and personal success.

“As healthcare students, you spend a lot of time focusing on caring for others. It is equally important to take care of yourselves. Activities like these give us an opportunity to relax, interact, and remind one another that we are not alone in the challenges we face," she said.

The event also served as a reminder of the purpose of Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every May, which seeks to increase understanding of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and encourage people to seek support when needed.

Speaking during the training, Mr. Wilfred Siakama from the National Treasury underscored the importance of adopting digital procurement systems in public institutions.

Deputy Supply Chain Manager, Mr. John Mwangi reaffirmed the College’s commitment to compliance with government procurement laws and regulations.
“Compliance remains critical in ensuring accountability, integrity, and effective service delivery within institutional operations,” said Mr. Mwangi.

The programme is aligned with ongoing public sector reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accountability in procurement processes. KMTC Participates in Awareness Campaign on Obstetric Fistula Prevention and Treatment

Kenya Medical Training College students and faculty, on May 22, 2026, joined healthcare stakeholders and partners in commemorating the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (EDEOF) during an awareness walk held at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Health through the Division of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, was held under the theme: “Her Health is a Right: Invest to End Fistula and Childbirth Injuries.”

The awareness walk sought to sensitise members of the public on the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula and other childbirth-related injuries.

The event was flagged off from the KNH Administration Block by Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris.

Addressing participants during the occasion, Hon. Passaris emphasised the need for greater public awareness and support for women affected by obstetric fistula.

“Treatment of fistula should be embraced, and communities educated more on the condition because every woman deserves access to quality healthcare. Her health is her right,” she said.

Speaking to KMTC students after the walk on behalf of the CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch, Nairobi Campus Deputy Principal Finance and Administration Ms. Carol Oyugi commended the students for participating in the awareness initiative and encouraged them to remain committed to promoting maternal and reproductive health within communities.

“As future healthcare professionals, you have a responsibility to advance health education, support early intervention, and provide compassionate care to women affected by childbirth injuries and related complications,” said Ms. Oyugi.

The event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health, Kenyatta National Hospital, Fistula Foundation, M-Pesa Foundation, Nairobi County Department of Health, and Amref Health Africa, among other stakeholders committed to advancing maternal and reproductive health.

As a leading institution in training healthcare professionals, KMTC continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s healthcare system by developing competent human resources for health, equipped to provide quality maternal and reproductive healthcare services.
