The Sunday Night Tummy Ache
🧠 The Brain-Gut Connection
👇 How to Help Them: Read our guide below
Physical symptoms like recurrent abdominal pain, headaches and fatigue are among the most frequent presentations of anxiety and depression in children.

The brain and gut are constantly talking to each other through a massive " "highway" of nerves and chemicals/ hormones.

Think of your child's nervous system like an internal alarm system. The wiring has become extra- sensitive. The physical symptoms they feel are 100% real, but the alarm is going off because of a "false trigger" ( anxiety / stress) rather than an actual "break-in" ( eg infection/ disease). Our goal is to help dial down the sensitivity of this alarm system.

Starting the conversation about depression can feel overwhelming — especially for teenagers. But it doesn’t have to begin with the “perfect words.” Sometimes, one honest sentence, one note, or one safe moment is enough to open the door to support and healing. 💜
As parents, caregivers, teachers, and friends, creating emotionally safe spaces matters more than having all the answers. Listen without judgment. Stay present. Take their feelings seriously.
And to teenagers reading this: you do not have to carry heavy feelings alone. Reaching out is brave — not dramatic, weak, or attention-seeking.
Mental health conversations save lives. Let’s normalize asking for help early. 🌱

Reminder to every teenager reading this 💛
You don't have to have it all together.
You don't have to please everyone.
You don't have to carry it all alone.
Your mental health matters more than any expectation placed on you. 🐘

📌 Save this. Share it with a teen who needs to hear it.

Parents during tantrums and meltdowns 😂😭
We try so hard…
We stay so calm…
We use the gentle voice, the deep breaths, the validation…
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter 😂
Somebody is still crying because the banana broke in half.

PART 2 — Tantrum Tips That Actually Help 👶💛
During a tantrum, your child is not thinking logically — they’re emotionally overwhelmed. That’s why connection works better than control in the heat of the moment.
Validate first, redirect after
“I see you’re really upset right now.”
Feeling understood helps calm the nervous system faster than immediately correcting behaviour.
Give back small control
“Do you want to sit on the sofa or in your room?”
Small choices reduce power struggles and help children feel safe again.
Remember: regulation first… lesson later. ❤️
Which tip have you tried before?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Children experience stress, anxiety, overwhelm, sadness, and emotional struggles too — it just doesn’t always look the way adults expect. Sometimes it shows up as tantrums, withdrawal, irritability, tummy aches, sleep changes, or difficulty concentrating.

In this video, we unpack common misconceptions about mental health in children and highlight signs parents can look out for across different age groups.

Creating safe conversations around emotions helps children feel seen, understood, and supported. When we teach children the vocabulary to name their feelings, we teach them that no emotion is “bad,” shameful, or forbidden.

A child who can express their feelings is a child better equipped to regulate, connect, and ask for help when they need it.

A tantrum is not a child giving you a hard time…
it’s a child having a hard time.
And in those moments, your calm becomes their safety. 💛
Meltdowns don't need punishment.
No lecturing. Toddlers need actions not words.
‎The most powerful thing you can do is:
✔ stay close
✔ stay calm
✔ help their nervous system settle first
Because children borrow regulation before they learn it for themselves.
Connection first.
Then regulation.
Then problem solving.

Parents — what’s one thing that helps your child calm down during a tantrum?
