Lifestyle choices influence longevity.
Living long and healthy entails building on key spans.

5 spans that matter
Health span is about extending the years lived free from chronic disease:

Eat a predominantly Mediterranean diet: plant-based foods, healthy fats, and lean proteins.
Maintain regular aerobic and resistance exercise.
Manage chronic stress.
Prioritize quality sleep.
Avoid or minimize to***co and excessive alcohol.
Seek regular screening e.g. blood pressure

Better metabolic health.
Lower risk of chronic disease e.g. diabetes.
Greater independence later in life.

Sadly, we are living long but with short health spans.

Is how long you maintain strength and mobility.

Prioritize resistance training.
Maintain adequate protein intake e.g. eggs and fish.
Include regular walking and other forms of physical activity.

The default response of the nervous system is the muscle reflex (movement).

Exercise increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that increases brain neuroplasticity.

is about preserving memory, attention, learning, and cognitive function.

Exercise regularly to improve blood flow to the brain.
Get adequate and quality sleep.
Keep learning, reading, writing..
Manage chronic stress.

Chronically elevated stress hormones (cortisol) can atrophy the brain, especially the hippocampus, which is involved in memory and context processing.

4. ๐™Ž๐™š๐™ญ ๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™–๐™ฃ
is maintaining healthy sexual function, intimacy, and reproductive health across the lifespan.

Exercise regularly to maintain cardiovascular and metabolic health
Prioritize adequate sleep.
Maintain open communication in relationships.

Is about maintaining meaningful relationships and social engagement throughout life.

Invest in a few deep, meaningful relationships.
Make time for family and friends.
Participate in activities that create a sense of belonging and purpose.
Protect yourself from toxic relationships.

Chronic isolation raises the levels of tachykinin, which makes you prone to anxiety, and depression.
Rats with social support (other rats) show a lower stress response when exposed to electric shocks in the lab.

Book recommendations: Genius Foods by Lugavere

๐Ÿ’ก ๐‘ต๐’๐’•๐’†: The same neuroplasticity that allows for maladaptive changes also allows for adaptive changes.

How to stop temper tantrums in children.
Parents and guardians, here is the protocol.

๐Ÿค” Imagine you are in the mart, and your child wants the big doll that costs a fortune, but you cannot afford it, and they start throwing a tantrum. How do you feel? Shame, right?

โ†’ Childrenโ€™s sense of shame is non-existent and they aren't scared to use it to control you.

The capacity for emotional regulation is underdeveloped in children.

Emotional regulation is regulated by the prefrontal cortex (which matures at 25 onwards). As a parent, you have to help regulate your childโ€™s emotions.

Is the child getting attention?
Are they getting the toy, sweets, or another desired item?
Are you giving in simply to stop the crying?

A behaviour that repeatedly produces a reward is more likely to be repeated (behaviour reinforcement).

โ†’ If the tantrum is maintained by getting the toy, donโ€™t give the toy.
If it is maintained by attention, withdraw excessive attention from the tantrum while remaining calm

Inconsistent reinforcement can make a behaviour persistent (intermittent reinforcement)
It is adopted by gambling companies to keep gamblers pressing the lever

The tantrum may temporarily become louder or more intense.
The child may cry harder, scream, or increase the tantrums

โ†’ Donโ€™t take the bait; be calm. This temporary increase is known as an โ€œextinction burstโ€
Do not interpret the initial escalation as proof that the approach is failing

Your child is learning emotional regulation partly through your response

Research shows that paraverbal and nonverbal communication account for 93% of all communication
Lower your voice
Do not respond with "adult tantrums "; shouting and punishment

When the child becomes calm, acknowledge the calm behaviour.
โ†’ Reinforce waiting, communicating, and accepting โ€œno.โ€

Behavioural extinction does not necessarily erase the original learning.
โ†’ Instead, the brain learns a competing association: โ€œThis behaviour no longer produces the reward.โ€
The old behaviour can sometimes return; save the post and revisit.

๐Ÿ’ก ๐‘ต๐’๐’•๐’†: The same neuroplasticity that allows for maladaptive changes also allows for adaptive changes.

Secure minds need defences.

In the same way diarrhoea is a defence mechanism of the body against certain infections.

๐Ÿค” Do you know that fainting is a severe defence response, where an individual temporarily loses consciousness in response to stress, fear, and pain.

1. ๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™–๐™ก
Refusing to accept a painful reality.

โ†’ Denial is the first stage of death or grief, for more detail, read On Death and Dying by Elisabeth Kรผbler-Ross.

Disturbing thoughts, memories, or impulses are kept outside conscious awareness, e.g. r**e experience

Expressing attitudes or behaviours that are opposite to an unacceptable underlying feeling.
e.g. You hate your boss, but you
behave with excessive friendliness toward them.

e.g. Someone experiencing grief discusses the stages of death in detail to avoid grieving.

Redirecting unacceptable or destructive impulses into creative, or socially acceptable activities.
e.g. Anger (energy) is sublimated into exercise, art, writing, or climate activism.

In the same way, continuous diarrhoea is treated as a disease (leads to dehydration ), so are rigid, automatic defences that become a disorder (neurosis or psychosis)

How rumination changes the brain.
Repetitive negative thinking keeps the brain locked in a stress loop.

๐Ÿค” Remember Stoic Senecaโ€™s wisdom: โ€œHe suffers more than necessary, who suffers before it is necessary.โ€
I believe he was referring to the psychic pain caused by chronic rumination (negative thinking)

The brain during rumination:

The DMN becomes excessively engaged and more strongly coupled with memory-related regions

Repeated negative thinking can prolong HPA-axis activation and cortisol exposure, potentially contributing to hippocampal changes
Greater vulnerability to negative memories

โ†’ The brain has difficulty switching from โ€œWhy did this happen?โ€ to โ€œWhat can I do next?โ€
Difficulty shifting attention away from distress

"Reform delivered. Health as a right" ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช

๐Ÿ“Œ At the Kenya Health Summit 2026, one message stood out: meaningful health reform must reach people where they live, work, and raise their families.

Kenya has deployed more than 107k Community Health Promoters (CHPs), reaching over 9 million households across the country.

CHPs are bringing healthcare closer to the people, for the people by:
Conducting basic health screenings
Providing health education and counselling
Promoting disease prevention
Identifying health risks early
Managing minor ailments
Referring patients who require further medical attention
Helping households understand and access available healthcare services

๐Ÿ“Œ A health system that can detect risks early, connect households to care, strengthen health data, and guide people to the services they need is a system that is putting health as a right into practice.

CHPs are the critical link between communities and the healthcare system.

They are helping shift healthcare from being primarily reactive to becoming more preventive, accessible and community-based.

Failure hurts.
The brain treats failure like physical pain.

The brain cannot completely separate physical pain from psychological pain; both can be experienced as pain.

๐Ÿค” I have failed countless times, but one of the most awkward experiences came after I had graduated and was looking for a job.

I went for an interview, and the interviewer asked me for a โ€œstatement of faith.โ€

I had no idea what that meant, and I still donโ€™t.

But that wasnโ€™t the painful part.

They had a statement of faith, but apparently lacked a statement of ethos.

Iโ€™ve never received any feedback from them.

How Failure Affects You

Failure can trigger stress, anxiety, sadness, and psychological distress.
The mind may begin anticipating failure before another attempt is even made.

Failure can make you question your abilities and personal worth.
โ†’ โ€œI failedโ€ can gradually become โ€œI am a failure.โ€
Reduced self-confidence
Increased self-criticism
Fear of trying again

โ†’ Failure can activate the bodyโ€™s stress response.
A chronically activated HPA axis can lead to chronically elevated cortisol levels, which are linked to anxiety and depression.
Psychological stress can persist long after the event has ended.

The mind may repeatedly ask:
โ€œWhat did I do wrong?โ€
โ€œWhy wasnโ€™t I good enough?โ€

Reflection helps you learn from failure.
Rumination keeps you emotionally trapped in it.

After a painful failure, avoiding challenging situations can feel safer.
You stop applying for jobs.
You stop starting businesses.
You stop asking people out.
You stop trying.

Repeated failure can teach the brain (maladaptive neuroplasticity) that its actions do not change outcomes.
You may eventually stop trying, you become helpless.

๐Ÿ’ก ๐‘ต๐’๐’•๐’†: The same neuroplasticity that allows for maladaptive changes also allows for adaptive changes.
