I'm not a doctor...
Last year, I was going through a lot of issues with losing feeling in my arms, wrists and fingers. I went through multiple tests, including a brain scan (apparently I have one, but it's stuck as a 12 year old boy inside ;) ). It was determined instantly it wasn't carpal, but my neck has been pinching my brain stem, probably from looking down a lot.
No cause was determined for the loss of feeling. The specialist was fabulous, and she recommended looking into taking vitamin B-12. She made a connection that the vitamin is good for nerve cell health. For brain function and energy level.
I started taking it immediately when I saw her last in January and take one a day. For $21 USD (I did the conversion as most of you are American here), cost of 14 cents a day. I didn't notice the difference immediately but figured I would leave it on the table when Daniel and I have breakfast each morning, and just take it as there is no harm.
I realized last week that I don't wake up with numbness in my hands. When it comes to touching and grabbing things, I can feel it fully. I don't have the wrist or finger pains like I used to.
I won't be able to regain my full motor skills, so I have to adjust to grabbing small things, which I am okay with.
I figured and came to terms last year that my career of crochet may be over, and figured I could move myself into a direction of design and participating in crochet, but not physically crocheting it, but get a team member on board to crochet my stuff. But the joy for me is in the stitching part, which would otherwise be a mental thing to overcome if I could actually overcome that.
It's done me wonders, and I am crocheting and designing more than I ever have. I just haven't stopped to take a mental inventory of myself and my health to realize that the situation I was facing is behind me.
In the end, it was a very cheap fix. Our healthcare here in Canada covered all of the costs during my testing phases. The most expensive part was driving to the city to see the specialist. Our Canadian healthcare would have covered surgery and hospital costs. Luckily, I didn't need to go further, and it turns out that an over-the-counter vitamin restored my feelings and relieved the pain in my hands.
As I said, I didn't notice the difference right away, but I think the 4 months I have been taking it have done me wonders. I realize not everyone has access to medical care as I do, but you may have an option to take a vitamin and give that a try. But as I said, I'm not a doctor and always seek your family physician/health care providers. Daniel and I are very fortunate to have one of the best NP's of our lifetime. She is so kewl and curious, and I know she's in our court if something goes sideways. Just lucky as we are assigned doctors here in Nova Scotia.
