🔥 SMOKE WILL KILL YOU LONG BEFORE THE FIRE REACHES YOU 🔥.
As the country continues to mourn the heartbreaking tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy, where at least 16 young students lost their lives and dozens were injured following a dormitory fire suspected to be arson, one important lesson stands out: the biggest killer in many fires is not the flames—it is the smoke.
Many people imagine fire deaths happen because someone is burned by flames. In reality, a large number of fire victims die from inhaling toxic smoke while trapped in enclosed spaces such as bedrooms, dormitories, offices, or houses.
🚨 Why is smoke so deadly?
When mattresses, foam, plastic, clothes, wood, and other materials burn, they release poisonous gases including carbon monoxide.
These gases:
❌ Reduce oxygen in the room
❌ Cause dizziness and confusion within minutes
❌ Make people lose consciousness before they can escape
❌ Damage the lungs and airways
❌ Can lead to death even without severe burns
In an enclosed room, thick smoke can fill the space rapidly. A person may be asleep, inhale toxic fumes, become unconscious, and never get a chance to run from the fire.
💡 What should you do if there is a fire?
✅ Get out immediately—do not waste time collecting belongings.
✅ Stay low and crawl because cleaner air is usually closer to the floor.
✅ Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth if possible.
✅ Raise the alarm as soon as you notice smoke or fire.
✅ Know your emergency exits beforehand.
This tragic incident reminds us that fire safety is everyone's responsibility. Whether at home, school, church, or workplace, never ignore the smell of smoke, blocked exits, or faulty electrical systems.
🕊️ May the souls of the students who lost their lives rest in peace, and may their families find comfort during this difficult time.
Remember: In a fire, the smoke is often the first and deadliest enemy. 🔥💨
