ISO 15189:2022 expects facilities and environmental conditions that protect both people and results, and fire safety sits right at the heart of that. It means extinguishers that are the right type for the hazards in each area, inspected on schedule and clearly marked. It means evacuation routes that are open, signposted and known by every shift. And it means staff who have practiced, not just read the SOP. Remembering four simple steps, pull the pin, aim at the base, squeeze the handle and sweep side to side, can make all the difference in the first critical seconds.

A laboratory with a fire safety SOP is compliant. A laboratory whose people can act on it calmly is truly prepared.

We concluded our two day ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก๐œ๐š๐ซ๐ž ๐‘๐ข๐ฌ๐ค ๐Œ๐š๐ง๐š๐ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐“๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  at The Cherangany Hospital, and the room at the end looked very different from the one we walked into.

Day one was about getting everyone to see risk the same way. By day two, the conversation had moved from what could go wrong to what the hospital would do about it. Participants assessed how likely each risk was and how serious its impact could be, then worked out which ones needed attention first and who should own each response. What started as a list of worries turned into a plan with names and actions attached.

When does implementation actually end?

Most laboratories would say it ends when the documents are approved and the procedures are rolled out. But ask any experienced quality professional, and they will tell you implementation never truly ends, it simply evolves into something quieter, daily discipline, small corrections, honest conversations about what is not working.

The laboratories that struggle most are often the ones that mistake a completed document for a completed culture. The two are not the same, and only one of them actually protects patients.
