OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY
This is abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health.
Body mass index (BMI-weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters ) is a simple index commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults.
Major causes of obesity & overweight are increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in sugars and physical inactivity due to the sedentary nature of many forms of work and increasing urbanization.
Common health consequences includes cardiovascular diseases (mainly heart diseases and stroke), diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.
Limiting consumption of high-sugar diets and processed foods, eating plenty vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts as well as engaging in regular physical activity are fundamentals for reducing overweight and obesity.
Remember, overweight, obesity and their related diseases are largely preventable.
