🌽 MAIZE HARVEST SEASON β€” SHORT RAINS FARMERS, HII NI YENU! 🀝🌾

Oyaaaa, wasee walipanda mahindi during the short rains (Sept–Oct), early to mid-December ndiyo ile time umekuwa ukingoja… HARVEST TIME!
Na k**a kawaida, kazi haishi kwa shamba, after harvesting, proper storage ndiyo huamua k**a utauza vizuri ama upoteze kwa weevils na moulds.

Hapa ni quick guide before you store your maize:

1. Dry Your Maize Properly β€” Hii ndio number one!
Mahindi lazima ikauke kabisa.
If it's not dry enough, moulds hukam faster than you expect.
Sun dry until the kernels sound hard when pressed.

2. Sort Out the Bad Ones
Usichanganye mahindi mbovu na ile safi.
One bad cob can mess the whole batch.
Chagua vizuri before storage.

3. Use Clean, Airtight Storage Bags
Gunia zikuwe:
βœ” Clean
βœ” Dry
βœ” Without holes
If possible, use hermetic/airtight bags to reduce insect damage.

4. Treat Your Grains (Optional but Very Important)
Use recommended grain protectants k**a dusting powders or tablets.
These keep away weevils kabisa.
Usi-overdose, just follow instructions.

5. Store in a Cool, Dry, Raised Area
Mahindi isichangamane na unyevu.
Keep bags off the floor with pallets or wood.
Good airflow = good storage.

6. Keep Checking Monthly
Usiweke tu alafu uende.

Wasee wa mashamba, si tujipange mapema bana?
2026 haitupi time ya kufikiria sana, so wacha tu–set soil ndio tukose stress later πŸ˜„

1. Soil Testing – usipande juu ya vibes tu!
Chunguza soil kwanza… maybe pH iko off, ama nutrients ziko low.
Si unajua guesswork kwa shamba huleta heartbreak? 😭

3. Lime – k**a soil imekua too spicy
K**a mchanga ni acidic hadi unaskia k**a imechukia, weka lime kidogo.
Inabalance mambo ndio plants zisipate stress.

4. Land prep β€” tufanye mapema, sio last minute rush
Lima, toa mawe, looseni soil…
Basically fanya soil ikae soft k**a chapati dough ya Sunday breakfast 😌

That’s free fertilizer apo, na unaiwaste juu ya kuonesha uko na lighter πŸ˜‚πŸ”₯

Soil ikijojea mapema = January planting iko smooth, no stress, no panic.

Understanding Coccidiosis in Poultry:
Key Considerations for Farmers, πŸ₯ Coccidiosis is a prevalent and severe disease affecting poultry, particularly young birds, which can lead to rapid losses if not addressed promptly. It targets the intestines and early detection is crucial for effective management.
Identifying Coccidiosis:
Farmers should be aware of the following indicators:
* Whitish or watery droppings
* Reddish or bloody material in the stool
* Foul-smelling droppings
* Weak, lethargic, or fluffed-up birds
* Reduced feeding and slow growth
* Isolation of birds The presence of reddish content in the stool is a classic symptom of coccidiosis, resulting from intestinal damage.
Etiology/ Couse of Coccidiosis:
Caused by the Eimeria parasite, which attacks the gut, the disease spreads through:
* Wet or dirty litter
* Contaminated feeders and drinkers
* Overcrowding
* Poor hygiene
* Mixing birds of different ages - Chicks between 3-6 weeks are the most susceptible.
Treatment and Management:
Prompt action is essential. Farmers should:
1. Initiate anti-coccidial treatment immediately, using options such as Amprolium, Toltrazuril, or Diclazuril, following the correct dosage for 3-5 days.
2. Provide supportive vitamins, particularly Vitamin K to control bleeding.
3. Ensure a clean environment by changing wet litter, washing drinkers and feeders, and maintaining a dry brooder.
4. Isolate severely weak birds to reduce contamination and promote recovery.

Prevention Strategies:
* Maintain dry litter
* Avoid overcrowding
* Clean feeders and drinkers daily
* Implement an effective brooding system
* Avoid mixing young and old birds
* Use preventive anti-coccidial feeds as necessary.
Good management and early treatment are key to maintaining healthy and productive birds.

Understanding Fowl Pox in Poultry: A Guide for Farmers
Fowl Pox is a slow-spreading viral disease that affects chickens, turkeys, and other birds, commonly found in Kenya, and can result in significant losses if not managed promptly.
There are two forms of Fowl Pox:
1. Dry (Skin) Form - This is the most prevalent form, characterized by: Scabs on the comb, wattles, and eyelids Lesions around the beak Rough, raised bumps on the face, transmission occurs through mosquito bites and direct contact.
2. Wet (Diphtheritic) Form This form is more severe and dangerous, marked by: White/yellow plaques inside the mouth and throat Difficulty breathing Reduced appetite, If not handled properly, this form can lead to higher mortality rates.

Transmission Modes.
Mosquito bites, Wounds or scratches, Contact with infected birds, Contaminated equipment or surfaces Cleanliness and mosquito control are crucial for prevention. πŸ’‰ Prevention Strategies
Vaccination at 6–8 weeks is the most effective protection, providing lifelong immunity with a single dose. Additionally, ensure:
βœ”οΈ Reduced mosquito presence around the poultry house
βœ”οΈ A dry and clean poultry house
βœ”οΈ Early isolation of sick birds
βœ”οΈ Regular disinfection of equipment

⚠️ Treatment and Management.
While there is no direct cure for Fowl Pox, supportive care is essential:
1. Administer vitamins (particularly Vitamin A)
2. Apply iodine on dry pox lesions
3. Maintain consistent feeding and watering schedules
Most birds recover with proper management, especially with the dry form. Healthy management practices combined with proper vaccination ensure a protected and productive flock.
Nyumbani Agrovet is dedicated to guiding you on the right vaccines and poultry care. πŸ’šπŸŒΏ

πŸ•·οΈ FARMING TIP: How to Prevent Tick Infestations

Ticks are a big problem for many farmers and can easily reduce your animals production. Here are a few simple ways to keep them under control:

1. Check your animals often
Look around the ears, neck, tail area and between the legs. Catching ticks early helps a lot.

2. Use acaricides correctly
Spray, dip or pour-on using the right mixing ratios. Don’t overdose or underdose, and remember to rotate products to avoid resistance.

3. Keep the housing area clean
Dry floors, clean bedding and regular cleaning make it harder for ticks to survive.

4. Isolate new animals
Before mixing them with others, check and treat them. Many farms get ticks from newly bought animals.

5. Clear the environment
Cut tall grass and remove overgrown bushes where ticks like to hide.

A little consistency goes a long way. Good tick control means healthier animals and better production.

Optimizing Poultry Farming Practices: Avoiding Common Mistakes.
Effective poultry farming requires attention to detail to prevent losses. Several common mistakes can be easily avoided by adhering to best practices. Key areas to focus on include:
1. Providing Adequate Space, Overcrowding leads to stress, slow growth, and increased disease susceptibility. Ensure your birds have sufficient room to thrive. 2. Ensuring Proper Ventilation A well-ventilated environment is crucial. Inadequate ventilation can lead to ammonia buildup, weakening your birds' immune systems. 3. Implementing a Correct Feeding Regimen Using the appropriate feed at each stage of growth is vital. Follow the recommended sequence: Starter β†’ Grower β†’ Finisher.
4. Maintaining a Vaccination Schedule, Failing to vaccinate your flock exposes them to preventable diseases. Adhere to a recommended vaccination schedule to protect your birds.
5. Effective Brooding Management Proper brooding practices are critical. Ensure adequate heat, bedding, and cleanliness during the first weeks to promote healthy chick development.
By implementing these simple yet crucial measures, you can significantly improve the health, strength, and productivity of your poultry. πŸ₯🌿
