What does Tibet and the ancient Khmer Empire have in common?
More than you might think.
Many lintels across the Khmer Temples feature a wrathful, fierce looking being with sharp teeth devouring garlands that shoot out other beings as they extend outward. He is Rahu, wearing a Kala mask, from the ancient Hindu myths, and he represents the passage of time and impermanence.
"Time devours everything"
On the right we see the popular depiction of Yama in Vajrayana Buddhism, holding up and supporting Samsara, the Cycle of Existence. Yama is the Lord of Death, the deity who decides your fate at the moment of death.
Different mythic background, same concept reminding us that nothing lasts forever.
