Men at risk for cardiovascular disease also have a higher frequency of erectile dysfunction. They seem to have the same pathophysiology of atherosclerotic disease. Therefore, a heart-healthy diet also plays a role in erectile dysfunction.
Several studies have shown that people who practice the Mediterranean diet have a lower frequency of erectile dysfunction. In another study, men with metabolic syndrome and erectile dysfunction experienced an improvement in function after practicing the Mediterranean diet for two years.
The Mediterranean diet is a high-fat, low-protein, and especially animal-based (except fish) diet. The fats in this diet come from fish and high-fat nuts like walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and avocados. Mediterranean people like to eat fish, eat chicken in moderation and limit other meats as well as eggs and dairy. They also have a variety of fruit and vegetable meals. In particular, they like to use a variety of natural spices to accompany food such as cinnamon, pepper, onions, and garlic.
On the other hand, when considering erectile dysfunction in obese or overweight men alone, studies have shown that weight loss through a low-calorie and low-fat diet improves erectile function.
Therefore, current evidence recommends the Mediterranean diet to improve erectile function in the short term and limit its deterioration in the long term.
