A research team led by Professors Yong S*k Yoon and Jong Lyul Lee of the Division of Colon and Re**al Surgery at AMC have demonstrated for the first time that PDRN, a regenerative substance derived from salmon DNA, can significantly improve outcomes in patients with Crohn’s disease-related fistulas, a difficult-to-treat complication known for frequent recurrence. 🩺🧬🐟

In a study of 47 patients, those who received PDRN injections during fistula surgery achieved an 83.3% complete healing rate one year after treatment, compared with 46.2% in patients who underwent conventional surgery alone. The PDRN group also recovered faster, reaching complete healing in an average of 3.3 months versus 5.9 months. Because PDRN promotes tissue regeneration and reduces inflammation, while costing about 100 times less than stem cell therapy and requiring no cell culture process, researchers believe it could become a more accessible and cost-effective treatment option for refractory Crohn’s disease fistulas. 🔬💉🏥📊✨

AMC has become the first hospital in Korea to perform 8,000 kidney transplantations, marking a major milestone in its 35 year history of treating patients with end stage kidney disease. Since its first deceased donor kidney transplantation in 1990, AMC has achieved world-class long term graft survival rates, including an 80.1 percent survival rate at 15 years, while leading the nation in high risk procedures such as ABO incompatible and immunologically high risk transplantations. 🏥🩺💙🫀🔬

AMC has also expanded access to transplantation for older patients, pioneered robotic kidney transplantation with more than 200 cases, and continues to improve outcomes through its multidisciplinary transplantation care system, helping thousands of patients achieve longer survival and a better quality of life. 🎉✨📈

AMC has become the first healthcare institution in Korea to deploy a Private AI Knowledge Retrieval System operating within a completely isolated closed network environment. Running entirely on AMC’ss internal servers and data, the system eliminates reliance on external cloud services while ensuring the highest level of security for sensitive patient information. Healthcare professionals can obtain accurate answers within seconds by querying extensive clinical guidelines and operational protocols, enabling faster and more informed decision making in critical situations. 🏥🤖🔒🛡️💻

The system is powered by a vector database and Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), which allow AI to retrieve relevant information from verified hospital documents and generate evidence based responses while minimizing the risk of hallucinations. To overcome the limitations of a closed network environment, AMC also plans to introduce a sandbox based external search engine that retrieves up to date medical information through fully anonymized queries, ensuring that no internal hospital data are exposed outside the organization. 📊📚⚕️🔍

AMC achieved the Asia-Pacific region’s first successful free flap reconstruction using the Symani supermicrosurgical robotic system, connecting ultrafine blood vessels smaller than 1 mm in diameter in a patient with soft tissue sarcoma. The patient recovered well and was discharged eight days after surgery. 🤖🔬🏥🩺

The achievement demonstrates the clinical feasibility of robotic supermicrosurgery, a highly specialized field traditionally limited to a small number of expert surgeons worldwide. AMC plans to expand the use of the robotic system in complex reconstructive procedures and continue building clinical evidence to advance robotic microsurgery and broaden treatment options for patients. ⚕️✨👏

AMC invited around 40 pediatric cancer patients and their families to Ulsan for a special two day trip as part of the ‘Our Heroes’ social contribution program organized with Hyundai 1% Nanum (Sharing) Foundation and ChildFund Korea. Designed to support children undergoing or recovering from treatment for serious illnesses, the program gave families an opportunity to step away from hospital routines and create meaningful memories together. 🏥💛👨👩👧👦

During the trip, participants toured the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard, visited major attractions in Ulsan, and attended a professional soccer match at Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium, where children also joined a special high five event with players from Ulsan HD FC. The foundation covered all travel expenses, while medical staff from AMC accompanied the families to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. The organizations plan to continue the program later this year by inviting more families to a theme park for emotional healing and recovery. ⚽🚢 😊

A research team at AMC led by Professor Dong-Myung Shin from the Department of Cell and Genetic Engineering identified for the first time the molecular mechanism that regulates Dnmt3L, a key protein responsible for maintaining stem cell quality and differentiation capacity. The team discovered that acetylation at specific sites on the Dnmt3L protein prevents its normal degradation, causing abnormal accumulation and reduced stem cell function. They also found that the proteins Prdm14 and G9a help maintain stem cell stability by suppressing this acetylation process. 🧬🔬🧫

The researchers confirmed that stem cells with acetylated Dnmt3L showed disrupted DNA methylation patterns and significantly lower differentiation efficiency into neural and cardiac cells. The findings suggest that Dnmt3L acetylation could become an important biomarker for selecting and manufacturing high quality stem cell therapies. The study was published in ‘Experimental & Molecular Medicine’, a sister journal of . 🧪🏥✨
