Entrance Map for Beit Sarmada Native Botanical Garden

This is a native botanical garden, regional to the Wadi of Batloun. This valley is a shelter for many rare and endemic species representative of the fragile and unique flora of Mount Lebanon. A selection of natural habitats (rocky slopes, cliffs, wooded areas and humid areas) were recreated in the garden to allow the cultivation of the largest range of plant species, which are estimated around 200, and include mostly perennial herbaceous, vines and shrubs.  
The objective of this botanical garden is to exhibit the floral diversity of this valley, intertwined with layers of our land-based culture through the intervention of traditional artists. Through a participatory approach, the visions, expertise, and passion of many were reflected in this collective space, and like our wild environments, will ever-evolve.

خريطة لحديقة بيت سرمدى للنباتات البريّة

‎ها حديقة نباتاتٍ محليّة تقع في منطقة وادي بتلون. هذا الوادي هو مأوى لكثير من النباتات البرّيّة النّادرة والفريدة من نوعها في جبل لبنان. مجموعة مختارة من الموائل الطبيعية (منحدرات صخرية،  ومنحدرات مشجّرة ومناطق رطبة) كلّها تمّ إنشاؤها في الحديقة للسماح بزراعة أكبر مجموعة من الأنواع النباتيّة ، والتي تقدّر بحوالي مائتي نوع ، وتشمل في الغالب الأعشاب المعمّرة والكروم والشّجيرات. 
‎الهدف من هذه الحديقة هو إظهار التنوع النّباتيّ لهذا الوادي ، المتشابك مع طبقات أرضنا والمُعزّز
‎ بثقافة أردناها من خلال تدخّل الفنّانين التقليديّين،وذلك عبر نهجٍ تشاركيّ ، ورؤى وخبرات وشغف كثيرين ممّن شاركوا في هذه المساحة الجماعيّة، الّتي تشبه بيئاتنا البرّيّة، والّتي سوف تتطوّر باستمرار

We invite you to the opening of “Beit Sarmada Native Botanical Garden”, part of the “Aakhir Eyam El-Sayfiyeh” (Final Days of Summer) Festival, organized by .

Please find the details of the event in the above flyer.

This is our first regional native botanical garden, an exploration in the reclamation and re-imagination of the land-based culture of Wadi Batloun, and the greater Chouf region.

Each day will feature an introduction to the garden, a traditional arts workshop from those who participated in the creation of this collective garden, along with a celebration of the works of the past year at Beit Sarmada Community Center and our surrounding community. This will include a guided hike into Wadi Batloun, a market of food preservations and hand-crafts, and an open mic.

The spirit of this space is in the participatory approach, where everyone who is present is invited to be a co-creator of the space.

We look forward to sharing this celebration with you all.

‎هذه أول حديقة إقليمية نُنشِئها في سعينا لإعادة رسم وتخيل ثقافتنا القائمة على الأرض في وادي بتلون ومنطقة الشوف.

‎سيشهد كل يوم مقدمة عن الحديقة، وورشة عمل للفنون التقليدية من قبل الحرفيين الذين شاركوا في إنشاء هذه الحديقة الجماعية، إلى جانب الاحتفال بأعمال العام الماضي في مركز بيت سرمدى الإجتماعى والمجتمع المحيط بنا. كما سيشمل الإفتتاح نزهة بصحبة مرشدين في وادي بتلون، وسوق مونة وحرف يدوية، وميكروفون مفتوح للجميع.

From a 30-years-abandoned land to our first regional native botanical garden in bloom.

🐝Swipe to see the transition🐝

In April 2021, we partnered in the establishment of Beit Sarmada Community Center in Batloun, Chouf with . Today, this historical home’s small garden contains 130 wild species from Batloun’s valley (Wadi Batloun), flourishing in our re-creation of their diverse ecosystems. Traditional artists intervened to speak the story of our interactions with these ecosystems. Educational aids were installed, and too many bees and insects are flower-bathing to count.
This is the first of the series of regional botanical gardens that we hope to cultivate in each major elevation region of Lebanon, partnering with existing community centers, to create hubs of land-based knowledge gathering and dissemination.

‎من أرض مهجورة منذ ٣٠ عامًا تزهرأول حديقة نباتات محلية إقليمية.

‎في نيسان ٢٠٢١ ، شاركنا في إنشاء بيت سرمدى في بتلون، الشوف مع جمعية سرمدى. تحتوي هذه الحديقة اليوم ١٣٠ نوعاً من النباتات البرية المحلية من وادي بتلون حيث تنمو هذه النباتات وتزدهر بعد إعادة إحياء أنظمتها البيئية المتنوعة في الحديقة كما تمت اضافة الوسائل التعليمية. شارك فنانون تقليديون للتحدث عن قصة تفاعلاتنا مع هذه الأنظمة البئية. وأصبحت العديد من النحل والحشرات تتوافد إلى حديقتنا للاستحمام بأزهارها وورودها.
‎هذه هي السلسلة الأولى من سلسلة الحدائق النباتية الاقليمية التي نأمل أن تنتشر في مختلف المناطق اللبنانية، بالشراكة مع المراكز و الجمعيات القائمة فيها، لإنشاء تجمعات ومحاور تهتم بجمع ونشر المعرفة البئية الثمينة لأرضنا.

With autumn, our workshop series begins

for the sharing of intimate knowledge of our land from local experts - of what we find around us and what they inspire in our creation (tending land, listening for the whispering calls of harvest occasions, preserving her harvest in medicine and art) collocated at our native botanical garden.

All workshops will be recorded and made available for free as an open-sourced online series.

May we replenish and re-awaken our indigenous knowledge.

We begin with compost - back towards the soil as we begin our slow metamorphosis into winter’s sleep.

Lebanon is in pain - her people, seas and rivers, her forests and her soil,
And there is no solace to this pain other than revolution.
Yet this revolution is not one of revenge,
For justice comes of no other revolution than that of the self,
With our native landscape as our home base,
As our Sun's revolution around our Earth massages our eyes for sleep as it sets,
Seeps through dense Earth, up from under our beds to paint our dreamscape,
And enlightens in vivid clarity our days to inspire action.
It is to be resilient in our trust,
To be integral to our visions,
And to stand in unwavering resistance against the drowning forces of hope.
May we care for our land and accept her endless gifts.
May we care for one another and birth spaces, corners, communities for co-creation of peace.
This is our story of the past year, with prayer that all who feel called to stand hand-in-hand with us.

لبنان يتألم؛ شعبه، وبحره، وأنهاره، وغاباته، وتربته. لبنان يتألم.
وليس هناك من عزاء لهذا الألم سوى بالثورة.
ولكنها ليست ثورة إنتقام، لأن العدالة لا تنبع إلّا من الثورات التي طالت الذات مع إتخاذ الأرض كملذانا ومأوانا.

Tariq El Nahl brief, to all interested in sharing in our journey

Gathering stories:
Following the calendar of our land and sharing stories of invitation into the occasion. Ask the elders of your communities, and if inspired write new ones.

Native botanical gardens:
We will plant botanical ardens in different regions located in community spaces. The first one is underway in Batloun, El Chouf, at Beit Sarmada (). These are spaces of expression, interaction and experimentation, of all culture that is born from the land of each region.

Medicine making:
We are offering free basic medicines for each season, made collectively.

Seed Collection:
We are collecting local medicinal seeds from nature, preserving them in regional seed banks, co-located with botanical gardens, and making them accessible for people to purchase. Ask the elders for the old seeds.

Archiving:
All these efforts are documented to inspire the creation of children books and films.

First Actions:
First week of June, will distribute 500 copies of “Li Beirut”, an herbal guide created in partnership with , for free. (Locations will be posted here this week)
Second week of June, will begin distribution of 60 baskets of herbal remedies made by medicine makers all over Lebanon, to those who affected by August 4th explosion.
Early July, will begin weekly workshops at our first botanical garden (Beit Sarmada). All will be posted here.

‎أنشأ حدائق للاعشاب المحلية
‎نهدف لاقامة حدائق في مختلف المناطق لاستكشاف والتعرف والمحافظة على الثروة النباتية المحلية. أولى مباراتنا هي قيد التنفيذ في بيت سرمدى القائم في بلدة بتلون الشوف. حلمنا تأمين مساحات للتعبير عن عاداتنا وإعادة إحياء الخبرات التراثية.

‎صناعة الأدوية
‎مع بداية كل موسم، نقدم مجانا أدوية تم صناعتها جماعيا. نرحب بكل من يرغب بتعميق معرفته بهذه الحرفة ومشاركة خبراته معنا.

‎جمع البذور
‎نقوم بجمع بذور الأعشاب البرية خاصة الطبية منها، فننبت جزء منها ليتم زرعها في الحدائق المحلية وجزء آخر يحفظ في بنك البذور

‎توثيق وأرشفة
‎نقوم بتوثيق كل هذه الخطوات والنشاطات والقصص لنتمك لاحقا من اصدار كتب للأطفال ودليل للأعشاب المحلية وفيلم يلقي الضوء على القصص النابعة من أرضنا وتراثنا فتلهمنا للتعامل بشكل مستدام مع بيئتنا وعناصرها.

‎الخطوات الأولى:
‎في أول أسبوع من حزيران يتم توزيع ٥٠٠ نسخة مجانية من كتيب العلاجات الطبيعية "لبيروت" وقد أعدّ من قبل SWANA ANCESTRAL HUB
‎وفي الأسبوع الثاني من حزيران نبدأ بتوزيع ٦٠ سلة لمن تضرر من انفجار ٤ آب. وتحتوي هذه السلل أدوية أعشاب وعلاجات مختلفة تم اعدادها من قبل أخصائيين من مختلف أرجاء بلادنا.
‎مع بداية الشهر المقبل (تموز) نبدإ بإقامة ورش عمل أسبوعيا في بيت سرمدى. سيتم الإعلان عنها لاحقا هنا.

ستّي الحجة كان عندها أمثال لكل مناسبة وموسم. فإذا حمت الشمس بنص الخريف كانت تبرر وتقول "ايه، ما المتل بقول بين تشرين وتشرين صيف تاني". للي تعلمتو من ستي مثلا عن شهر شباط انو موصوف بالغدر وما بيتأمنلو "شباط ما ع كلامو رباط" وبتسكت شوي ستي وبترجع بتزيد "ايه، بس ان شبط او لبط، بتضل ريحة الصيف فيه".
مش كل الاقوال كانت تعنيلي، وبالتالي ما حفظت إلا القليل، ومن جملة الامتال للي علقت براسي انو" مية نيسان بتحيي الإنسان". بالزمنات كنت أعرف كتار من للي بيجمعو شتا نيسان ليتداوا فيه. فالأحاديث عن فوايدو كتيرة وخصوصا بالمجتمع الإسلامي. فبمجرد ان كانت تعبق السما بغيوم نيسان كانت الطناجر والدسوتي واللكان والحلل تتطهر وتنحط بالفلا لتتعبا. ومن بعدما تنجمع المي، يتلا عليها آيات قرآنية لتصير دوا يستعان به لكل الامراض. انا بس سمعت هيدي الخبرية لأول مرة ضووا عيوني. بعدني بتذكر لذة الشعور، حسيت وكأنو حدا سلمني عصاية سحرية.
راحت الأيام، توفت ستي، خفت الأمطار خصوصا بنيسان وتغيرت الأحوال. وهلأ قلة ما العالم بتلجأ لهيك خبار، بس انا جربتها.
من كم سنة، فقدت شخص غالي عليّ فانهارت أحلام، واتحطمت آمال، وطعمة الحياة صارت مُرّة. جزء مني مات، ولفترة طويلة حسيت قلبي تقيل فكان لا بد من الاستعانة بدوا.
إجا نيسان وبلشت راقب السما والنجوم بانتظار إشارة.

My grandmother, the Hajjeh, used to refer to popular sayings to explain any situation, event, season and the weather that accompanies them all. When it gets a bit warm in the Autumn, she explained "between October and November, there is a second Summer they say."
What I have learned from the Hajjeh about February, for example, is that it is known for its moody temper, betrayals, and that its words cannot be trusted. Still, despite all, it carries the scent of Summer.
Not all of the popular sayings spoke to me; I remember only those that really resonated with my being. "The Waters of April revive humans" is my favorite one.
Through the years, I came across many Ahadith about the benefit of this specific rain and different detailed explanations on how it is to be harvested, prayed upon and used as a medicine for all kinds of ailments.
I still remember the sweetness of the sensation this story had on my body when I heard it for the first time. With my eyes wide open, it felt as if I had been handled a magic wand. Water as medicine. Simple, yet so powerful. Obvious, yet so hidden.
A few years ago, I lost a beautiful dream; my world crumbled, and as my hopes of a joyful tomorrow slowly slipped out of my sight, parts of me started to dim and die; my breath shortened, and for a long period of time my heart grew heavier. I knew it was time to call the Waters of April to revive me.
By the end of March, I started to prepare myself. I watched the dance of the clouds in the skies and listened to the whisper of the Stars for a sign of the Waters.

This platform is to integrate the traditional stories of our land-based culture with the stories that we are continually writing, in each interaction with out landscape. May we find inspiration in listening deeper, solace in sharing these stories with one another, and bliss in feeling more integrated into our community.

We hope that all who walk Tariq El Nahl revive the hope that healing is possible, that everything we need is around us, and that the medicines that we make together - that we involve ourselves in - are the most potent.

With nettles, khubbayze, brooms, clovers, cleavers, valerian, lavender, violets, chamomile, fruit trees blooms, and the smell of orange blossoms filling the villages,

May we together be in wellness

‎فلنعد الى أرضِنا ونحكي قصّتها
‎فنكشفِ سحرها

‎هذه المِنَصَّةُ هي لِدَمجِ القِصص التَّقليديَّة لأرضِنا، المبنِيَّة على أُسُسٍ ثقافيّة مع القصص الّتي نَكتُبُها بٱستمرار، في كلِّ تفاعلٍ حقيقيٍّ مع طبيعتِها. على أمل أن نجدَ الإلهام في الاستماع إليها بعمق، والفرح في مشاركة هذه القصص ، والهناءَ في شعور الٱندماج الفَعّال والبَنّاء في مجتمعنا.
‎نتمنّى أن يحيا أملُ الشِّفاءِ قَدرَ المُستطاع في كلِّ من يسير في طريق النَّحل، وأنْ يَجِدَ كلُّ ما يَحتاجُهُ متوفرا" حولَهُ، وأنْ تَكونَ الأدوية الّتي نصنَعُها معًا، والّتي نشركُ أنفسَنا فيها، أكثر قوَّةً.
‎لِنَكُنْ مع نبات القرّاص، والحمَّيضة، والخبَّيزة، والوزّال، ونبات البلسكاء، وحشيشة الهرّ (الناردين)، والخُزامى، والبنفسج، والبابونج، وبراعم أشجار الفاكهة، ورائحة زهرِ الليمون الّتي تعبُقُ بها القرى سائرين معًا في العافية و الشِّفاء.

the most precious medicine: our collective honey

This Winter has been a difficult season for us all. With the inability to gather in a time of utmost need, parts of us caught cold. Where we normally would be clustering for warmth in our hives, feeding on the past season’s honey, the pandemic, deepening economic crisis, and lingering effects of the explosion of August 4th in Beirut has left many alone and detached.
Yet, our roots deepen and darkness does reveal the depths. In Winter’s silence, together and in solitude, we reflected on the next steps for Tariq el Nahl: How do we want to offer ourselves to each other? What unique medicines do we bring? How can we, especially in these times, gather with one another in a way that is unshakeable?
We asked our collective of local herbal workers this winter to prepare what that they felt most called to offer. We are so grateful for the knowledge, time, spirit, and labor put into their crafting, and were able to facilitate this financially through our diaspora community and international allies who shared their generous support last year.
In this transition to Spring, we are ready to begin delivering these herbal assortments, storied by the hands of those who crafted them, to those who may need them most. We are also distributing “Li Beirut”, a tribute and guide to Lebanon’s indigenous plant allies and the medicines they offer, created by our co-conspirators at the SWANA Ancestral Hub. They are invitations into more intimate relationships with ourselves, and into a gentle acceptance of our Mother’s unconditional love, while being held by the plants in each offering. We hope that these offerings and reflections they inspire be a step towards opening the door to our own healing and conspiring with one another for wellness.

على طريق النّحل
من أغلى أدويتِنا قيمةً:تجميع العسل

كان هذا الشّتاء صعبًا علينا جميعًا. ومع عدم قدرتنا على التّجمع في وقت نحن بأمسّ الحاجة إليه، أصابتِ البرودةُ أجزاءً منّا. عادةً كنّا نجمع الدفءَ في خلايانا، ونتغذّى من عسل الموسم الماضي، إلّا أنَّ الجائحة، والأزمة الاقتصاديّة، والدّمار وآثار انفجار ٤ آب في بيروت، تركت العديد منّا في وحدةٍ وعزلة.
رغم ذلك، نُثبِّتُ جذورَنا في الأعماق الّتي كشفها ظلام المصاعب. وفي صمت الشّتاء، فكَّرنا معًا وتبصَّرنا في عزلتنا، فكان مشروع طريق النحل: كيف نضحي من ذواتَنا بعضُنا البعض؟ وماذا نقدم لبعضنا من أدويةٍ فريدة؟ كيف يمكننا، خصوصًا في هذه الأوقات الصّعبة، أن نتشاركَ بطريقةٍ لا تتزعزع؟
فطلبْنا، من مجموعةٍ محلّية تعمل في طب الأعشاب، تحضير ما يعتبرونه مناسبا" لتقديمه. ونحن شاكرون و ممتنون لهم، لروحهم و معرفتهم وجهودهم ، والوقت الذي بذلوه للوصول إلى الغاية المرجوّة، الّتي لاقتِ الدَّعم الماليّ في العام الماضي ، من مجموعَةٍ من مغتربي بلادنا وداعمين دوليّين ساهموا بسخائهم في تحقيق الهدف.
في بدايةِ فصل الربّيع، ها نحنُ مستعدون للبدء في توزيع تشكيلة هذه الأدوية العشبيّة التي تعكس محبة صانعيها، للمحتاجينَ الاكثرإليها. كما وسنقوم بتوزيع "لي بيروت"، وهو دليلٌ لتحيَّة مواطنينا اللبنانيين، المهتمّين بالنّباتات وبصناعة الأدوية منها، وهو من تأليف مجموعةٍ من مركزنا " SWANA Ancestral Hub" .كلُّ هذا هو دعوةٌ لتعميق علاقاتنا مع أنفسنا، ومحبتنا الغير مشروطة لامنا الارض، الحاضنة لنا بنباتاتها و خيراتها. نأمل أن تكون هذه العروض والتأملات المُستَلهَمة، خطوةً نحوفتح الباب لشفائنا والتعاون بعضنا مع بعض من أجل العافية.

the Bees return
“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: “Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect. Then, eat of all fruits, and follow the ways of your Lord made easy (for you).” There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think.” (Surat el nahl)

The Bees are the keepers of natural balance and creators of one of our most precious medicines, each role implied in the other. The Bees teach us that healing does not have to be lonely, difficult, or shameful, and that there is no need to expend our efforts wearing masks of well-being. Rather, they teach that healing is a release into balance, the ways “made easy”: a softening in trust, vulnerability, sensitivity, and collaboration with all beings around us (flora, fauna, and each other). On this path, we are surrounded by allies - ones who conspire with us for wellness. When we tune ourselves to the seasons of nature, supported by the interaction with these allies and our communities, we will have the way “made easy” - a restoration of balance internally and externally, and a reclamation of medicines for ourselves, our communities, and our local environments.

"وَأَوْحَى رَبُّكَ إِلَى النَّحْلِ أَنِ اتَّخِذِي مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا وَمِنَ الشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ (*) ثُمَّ كُلِي مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ فَاسْلُكِي سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلا يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ (*)" ( سورة النحل)

النَّحلُ يُحافظُ على التَّوازنِ الطَّبيعيَّ، وهو صانعُ أحَدِ أهمِّ أدويَتِنا وأكثَرِها قيمَةً، وكلُّ دورٍ له ينطوي على دورٍ الآخر. يعلِّمُنا النَّحلُ أنْ الشَّفاء لا ينبغي أن يكون موحشًا ، أو صعبًا، أو مُخزِيًا، وأنّه لا داعي لبذل طاقتنا على ارتداء أقنعة لنبدو في حالةٍ جيِّدة ومرحة. فالنّحلُ يُثبِتُ لنا أنَّ الشِّفاء هو في التَّوازن، والطُّرُق المُؤَدّية لَهُ "تُصبِحُ أكثر سهولةً“ من خلال الثِّقة، و الإحساس، والوعي، والتعاونَ معَ كلِّ الكائنات من حولِنا (النباتيّة، والحيوانيّة، وكلِّ واحدٍ منّا). وعلى هذا المسار، فنحن محاطون بحلفاء ، يتعاونون معنا من لتيسير الصّحّة والعافية. وعندما نضبط إيقاعنا على نغمات الفصول الطّبيعية، مدعومين بالتّفاعل مع هؤلاء الحلفاء ومجتمعاتنا، تصبح طريقنا "أكثرَ سهولَةً" – إعادةِ إحياء التوازنَ الدّاخليّ والخارجيّ، واستنباتِ الأدوية الطّبيعيّة لأنفسنا ومجتمعاتنا وبيئاتنا المحليّة.

Spring
the smell of orange blossoms

Spring begins on our Mother’s Day, when all is birthed anew from the womb of the Earth - from which we came and to which we will return. Motherhood is the light that glows softly in our sacral space, our energy center, that illuminates our ability to create our realities, to have the power, like nature, to regenerate and to heal. May we celebrate our Mothers (the Earth, our parental Mothers, and the Mother within each of us) today and each day, for creating the space for our birth, growth, and healing. In the unravelling of the first leaves on the branch-tips of Sumac trees, the renewed flamboyance in the posture of plantain leaves, the rainbow more colorful each day of anemone, orchid, iris, daisy, dandelion, and cyclamen, and the return of the storks, carrying in their pouches the newly-birthed, we find invitations. Each melody line of nature invites subtle integration within us, which we, when embodied, in a glow of remembrance, return intimately to our true inner natures. As we feel our sap rising within us this Spring, may we trust our Mothers in guiding us into bloom.

‎الرَّبيع
‎رائحةُ زهر الليمون

‎يبدأ الرَّبيع يومَ عيد الأمَّهات، زمن ولادة كلِّ ما هو حيّ من رحم الأرض ألّذي منهُ نولد وإليهِ نَعود. الأمومة هي الضَّوءُ المُتلألئُ في فضائنا المُقدَّس، ومركزُ طاقتِنا الّذي يُنيرُ قُدرَتَناعلى خَلْقِ حَقيقَتِنا، ويُعطينا القوَّة، للتجُّددِ والشِّفاء مثلما تَفعَلُ الطَّبيعة. فلنحتفلِ اليَوم وفي كلِّ يومٍ بأمَّهاتنا (الأرض، الوالدة، والأمّومة الموجودة في كلٍّ منا)، لخلقهنّ الحيِّز اللازم لولادتنا، ونُمُوِّنا، وشفائِنا. ولمّا تظهَرُ الأوراقُ الأولى في أطراف غصون أشجار السُّماق، ويَتَجَدُّدُ لَمَعانُ أوراق لِسانِ الحمل، ويبدو قوسُ القزح في كلِّ يومٍ أكثر تلوُّنًا من زهورِ شَقائِقِ النُّعمان، والسَّحلب، والسَّوسن، والأقحُوان والهندباء وبخّورِمريم ، عبر عودة اللّقالق حاملةً في جعبتها حديثي الولادة ، عندَئِذٍ نحن نتلقّى دعوات. فكلّ لحنٍ من ألحان الطّبيعة يدعو إلى التَّكامل الدَّقيق في داخلنا. وفي تَجَسُّدِهِ فينا، تَتَوَهَّجُ الذِّكريات، فنعودُ إلى طبيعتنا الداخليَّة الحقيقيَّة. عندما نشعر بالنّسغ يسمو في داخلنا هذا الرّبيع، فلنثق بأمّهاتنا وبارشادهن إيانا نحو الازدهار.
