The College of Medical Laboratory Science Sri Lanka (CMLS.SL) and the Academy of Health Professionals Sri Lanka (AHP.SL) proudly celebrate the remarkable achievement of Dr. Nishadi Delgama Arachchi—a distinguished Medical Laboratory Scientist who has brought international recognition to Sri Lanka through an outstanding scientific discovery in environmental health and allergic diseases.
Currently serving at Nagoya University, Dr. Nishadi has uncovered a groundbreaking mechanism explaining how ultrafine particles (PM2.5) behave differently in individuals with nasal allergies. Her research demonstrates that, rather than simply passing into the lungs, these microscopic particles accumulate up to four times more within the nasal cavity of allergic individuals. Acting as carriers, they bind toxic metals and chemical microparticles, intensifying inflammation and triggering excessive mucous (mucin) production.
This discovery reveals a critical cycle—where inflammation increases particle retention, and retained particles further aggravate allergic responses—ultimately worsening conditions such as allergic rhinitis. It highlights, with scientific clarity, how air pollution and allergy interact synergistically to amplify disease burden.
For this exceptional contribution, Dr. Nishadi has been awarded the prestigious Medical Encouragement Award 2026 by Nagoya University, becoming the first Sri Lankan to receive this honor, while also securing the top position in her faculty.
Her journey—from the University of Ruhuna, where she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, to becoming an academic and researcher in Japan—is a powerful testament to the global impact of Sri Lankan Medical Laboratory Scientists.
This achievement is especially meaningful to us—because she represents our profession.
She stands as proof that Medical Laboratory Scientists are not only diagnosticians behind the scenes, but also pioneers of cutting-edge research shaping modern medicine.
We are immensely proud—not only as a nation, but as a professional community.
Dr. Nishadi, your success is an inspiration to every young scientist, every student, and every Allied Health Professional in Sri Lanka. You have elevated the global recognition of our profession.
Congratulations on this extraordinary milestone. The future of science is brighter because of you.
