👁️ Expanding access to vision care starts with strong partnerships and practical solutions.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Health - Sri Lanka recently met with WHO and RestoringVision to discuss the next phase of efforts to improve access to reading vision services for adults aged 40 years and above affected by presbyopia.

The discussion brought together representatives from provincial and district health services, the Directorate of Non Communicable Diseases Unit, WHO, and primary care programme teams from Badulla, Monaragala, and Nuwara Eliya.

🫱🏽‍🫲🏾 The meeting reviewed implementation priorities, service delivery approaches, and opportunities to strengthen vision care through Sri Lanka's primary healthcare network.

Through this partnership, WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health - Sri Lanka to procure necessary screening equipment and train primary healthcare staff, enabling them to conduct vision assessments and dispense high-quality reading glasses directly within local communities 👓

🇱🇰 As Sri Lanka continues to advance primary healthcare reforms, integrating vision care services can help ensure more people have access to the care they need to remain healthy, productive, and independent.

Strengthening digital public services through collaboration 🇱🇰

Today, the Registrar General's Department hosted an induction programme for the new UN Volunteers (UNV) who will support efforts to further advance the e-Population Registry system and strengthen the delivery of efficient, accessible public services 👥

The programme was attended by Mrs. S. Jalatheepan, Registrar General, senior officials of the Registrar General's Department, and representatives from WHO, UNDP Sri Lanka and UN Volunteers - Sri Lanka, marking an important step in bringing together expertise and support for Sri Lanka’s digital transformation agenda.

Their contribution through the Joint Programme will help strengthen digital public infrastructure and improve how essential services reach people and communities across Sri Lanka.

The initiative is implemented by the Government of Sri Lanka and the United Nations Sri Lanka through the SDG Fund, with funding support from theHigh Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, the British High Commission Colombo, UN Peacebuilding and Peace Support, and the Joint SDG Fund, and is led by UNDP Sri Lanka and WHO Sri Lanka.

Dengue remains a major public health challenge in Sri Lanka 🦟, and strengthening preparedness is critical as the country continues its response to the current outbreak.

Today marked the start of the National Dengue Review 2026, bringing together the National Dengue Control Unit,Sri Lanka, provincial and district health teams, consultant community physicians, entomologists, and other stakeholders to review the dengue situation, assess ongoing response efforts, and identify priorities for the months ahead 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

Day 1 focused on reviewing epidemiological trends 📊, sharing experiences from the Western, North Western, North Central Provinces and Trincomalee District examining key areas including surveillance, vector control, risk communication, and outbreak preparedness.

As discussions continue over the next three days, a clear message has emerged: reducing the burden of dengue requires strong public health systems, data-driven action, multisectoral collaboration, and active community engagement 👥

Together, these efforts will help strengthen Sri Lanka's preparedness, improve outbreak response, and protect communities from dengue now and in the future 🇱🇰

👓 A simple pair of reading spectacles can make a big difference, helping people stay productive, independent, and engaged in daily life.

To support better access to vision care, the Directorate of Non Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry of Health - Sri Lanka , in technical collaboration with WHO and RestoringVision, recently conducted an observation visit to Divisional Hospital, Bandaragama, with the support of the Regional Director of Health Services Office, Kalutara.

The visit assessed the feasibility of providing free reading spectacles to adults aged 40 years and above experiencing presbyopia, which is the age-related decline in the eye's ability to focus on nearby objects, can affect reading, work, productivity, and overall quality of life 👁️

👏🏽 As part of this partnership, RestoringVision is preparing to provide 350,000 reading spectacles free of charge through a pilot programme, supporting the gradual expansion of services to screen, assess, and dispense high-quality reading spectacles closer to where people live across Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

Strengthening access to screening and affordable solutions is an important step towards healthy ageing and improved wellbeing ✅

🌍 By integrating vision care into primary healthcare, Sri Lanka is taking another step towards expanding equitable access to essential eye care services for all.

WHO Sri Lanka joined the Sri Lanka Clinical Trials Registry (SLCTR), the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), and national stakeholders to discuss how a more transparent, predictable, and integrated research approval pathway can support timely, ethical, and scientifically robust studies🫱🏽‍🫲🏾📊

A streamlined platform can help reduce duplication, clarify institutional roles, track timelines, strengthen oversight, and improve the experience of conducting ethical, high-quality research 🧑🏽‍💻

By modernizing research governance, Sri Lanka can build confidence among national and international partners 🌍, attract research investment and collaboration 👥 , support technology transfer 📲, and further position itself as a trusted hub for health research in the World Health Organization South-East Asia Region - WHO SEARO.

Strengthening the response to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) begins with understanding the needs, realities, and challenges faced by communities and health systems 🔎

Following recent discussions with KOFIH Sri Lanka Office , WHO Sri Lanka joined the inception workshop convened by Kangbuk Samsung Medical Center (KBSMC) in July, bringing together the Ministry of Health - Sri Lanka, academia, provincial and district health authorities, and development partners to initiate formative research under the Project for Strengthening Noncommunicable Disease Management Capacity in Sri Lanka 👥

The research 📊 will assess the burden of NCDs and examine health system capacities, service delivery, workforce readiness, access to care, and opportunities for digital health integration across Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara.

Through community surveys, health facility assessments, and policy and governance reviews 📑, the study will generate critical evidence to inform future investments and interventions for NCD prevention, early detection, treatment, and long-term management.

🗣️ During the workshop, WHO highlighted its continued support to Sri Lanka's NCD agenda, including technical assistance in health workforce development, digital health and telemedicine, research and monitoring, and strengthening results frameworks and indicators.

WHO remains committed to working closely with the Ministry of Health - Sri Lanka, 한국국제보건의료재단 KOFIH, KBSMC, academic institutions, and provincial health authorities to ensure that evidence translates into practical, sustainable, and scalable solutions for healthier communities 👥

🌐 As digital technologies become an increasingly important part of children's lives, fostering safe, healthy, and responsible online engagement is more important than ever ‼️

Last month, as part of the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) Annual Academic Sessions 2026, WHO Sri Lanka supported the symposium on "Digital Citizenship and Child Mental Health: A Policy Agenda for Sri Lanka" 📱🧠

This forum brought together health professionals, policymakers, academics, child protection experts, educators, development partners, and young people to explore the opportunities and challenges of growing up in a digital world. Discussions focused on the impact of digital environments on child and adolescent mental health and the need for evidence-informed, multisectoral action ✅

🗣️ In her opening remarks, Dr Momoe Takeuchi, Team Lead - Health Systems at WHO Sri Lanka, highlighted the importance of digital citizenship in supporting the well-being of children and adolescents, and reaffirmed WHO's commitment to strengthening evidence generation, policy dialogue, digital literacy, parenting support, and mental health promotion 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

As digital spaces continue to shape young lives, collective action will be key 🔑 Together, we can create the enabling environment, policies, and support systems children and adolescents need to thrive online and offline!
