Iaido (居合道) is a traditional Japanese martial art centered on the fluid, precise art of drawing a katana from its scabbard to instantly counter attack.Unlike other sword arts where the blade is already drawn, iaido emphasizes absolute situational awareness and the ability to strike in a single, continuous motion directly from the sheath.

SHIMAZU TOYOHISA (1570–1600) was a samurai of the Shimazu clan, the son of Shimazu Iehisa and the nephew of the renowned commander Shimazu Yoshihiro. From a young age, he showed strong military ability and took part in major battles of the Sengoku period.

In 1584, Toyohisa distinguished himself at the Battle of Okitanawate, where the Shimazu army defeated the larger forces of the Ryūzōji clan. In 1587, he also fought at the Battle of Hetsugigawa against the forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

After the Shimazu clan submitted to Hideyoshi, Toyohisa inherited Sadowara Castle. He participated in the Odawara Campaign of 1590 and in the Korean invasions of 1592–1598, strengthening his reputation as a brave and decisive commander.

In 1600, Toyohisa fought alongside his uncle Yoshihiro on the side of the Western Army at the Battle of Sekigahara. After the defeat, he helped cover the retreat of the Shimazu forces and was killed in battle. His actions helped Yoshihiro break through the enemy and return safely to Satsuma.

In the history of the Shimazu clan, Toyohisa is remembered as a symbol of warrior courage, loyalty, and willingness to sacrifice himself for his lord and clan.
