Chikungunya is a viral illness spread by mosquito bites and is well known for causing severe joint and muscle pain, along with high fever, skin rashes, fatigue, and headaches.

While the fever usually subsides within a few days, the joint pain and stiffness can persist for weeks or even months, affecting your daily life and mobility.

As a physiotherapist, here’s why physiotherapy is essential during Chikungunya recovery:
• Joint pain and stiffness are the most common long-term effects.
• Muscle weakness and fatigue can reduce your mobility.
• Without proper movement, joints can become more inflamed and painful.

Physiotherapy helps you:
• Reduce pain and stiffness in joints.
• Improve mobility and restore normal movement.
• Strengthen weakened muscles and reduce fatigue.
• Prevent long-term complications like joint deformities.

Simple Recovery Tips After Chikungunya:
1. Take plenty of rest during the acute phase.
2. Apply warm compresses on stiff joints.
3. Stay hydrated and eat nutritious food.
4. Begin light joint mobility exercises as soon as pain allows.
5. Consult a physiotherapist for a guided exercise program.
6. Avoid overexerting yourself – gradual progress is key.
7. Practice relaxation and breathing techniques to manage fatigue.

Remember:
Early physiotherapy can significantly reduce recovery time and improve your quality of life after Chikungunya.

Let’s move toward recovery – safely and steadily.
Stay active. Stay strong. Stay pain-free.

PEACE & LOVE: The New Gold Standard in Managing Acute Injuries like ACL Tears

As a physiotherapist, I often see athletes and active individuals coming in with ACL injuries—painful, limiting, and often mentally distressing. Traditionally, many have relied on the old RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), but modern physiotherapy has evolved—and we now follow PEACE & LOVE.

This isn’t just about healing the body; it’s about empowering it.

Let me break it down for you:

PEACE (for the acute phase)

P – Protect
Avoid activities and movements that increase pain during the first few days. Use braces or crutches if necessary to unload stress from the knee.

E – Elevate
Raise the leg above heart level to reduce swelling. A simple and effective way to support healing.

A – Avoid Anti-inflammatories
This surprises many! But inflammation is a natural part of the healing process. Using NSAIDs early may delay tissue repair.

C – Compress
Elastic bandages or compression garments help limit swelling and provide support.

E – Educate
One of our key roles as physios—educating you about your injury, setting realistic expectations, and encouraging an active approach to recovery.

LOVE (for the subacute and chronic phases)

L – Load
Progressive loading helps tissues heal and adapt. Strengthening exercises—especially targeting the quads, hamstrings, and glutes—are crucial in ACL rehab.

O – Optimism
Mindset matters! A positive outlook improves outcome. You are not just healing your knees, you are regaining your confidence.

At Advanced Physiocare, we use PEACE & LOVE as a framework to deliver evidence-based care that’s tailored to you. Whether you’ve just had an ACL tear or are recovering from surgery, your journey matters—and we’re here every step of the way.

Feel the peace. Trust the love. Heal better.
