Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance is pleased to be part of this important collaboration to advance the development of medical education in Lesotho.

Engagements with Build Health International and the IZUMI Foundation, alongside other key stakeholders, are contributing to the planning and development of a future medical school that will strengthen the country’s capacity to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

We value these partnerships and look forward to continued collaboration towards strengthening medical education and the health system in Lesotho.

Successful healthcare projects involve extensive research, planning, and documentation, all of which can contribute to strengthening healthcare systems. 📋

These efforts can require on-site visits. And this past month, BHI Architect and Medical Planner Rene Gasana met with the Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance and other stakeholders in Leribe and Maseru, Lesotho to talk about the development of a future medical school.

Supported by the Foundation, this project is one step closer to providing training and educational opportunities to Lesotho's next generation of healthcare workers.

“The need to feel heard and the need to feel understood.”

At her inaugural dinner, the Dean reflected on a deeply personal experience that has shaped her commitment to medicine in Lesotho.

She recalled her early years as a paediatrician, when there were still very few Basotho doctors in the country. She remembered how parents and grandparents would react when she walked into a room, greeted them and introduced herself in Sesotho — first with surprise: “U ngaka? Uena? Ngaka ea bana?" and then with a sense of relief.

For her, that relief represented something much deeper: the certainty that, at least that day, they would be able to tell their full story and be heard and understood.

This experience continues to shape her vision for a medical school that is not only committed to producing doctors, but to developing a health workforce that understands the people and communities it serves.

The institution will foster a culture of academic excellence, continuous learning, quality improvement and research capacity, aligned with Lesotho’s health priorities. These values will underpin a vision for a high-quality medical training institution rooted in social accountability, community engagement, excellence and innovation— addressing Lesotho’s key healthcare challenges, strengthening the health workforce and transforming health outcomes for Basotho.

Because the future of healthcare is not simply about having more doctors.

It is about nurturing doctors who listen, understand, learn, innovate and serve.

And perhaps, most importantly, doctors who make people feel heard and understood.

When the community sits with the data, the numbers tell a richer story.

The Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance PCAT Study Leads and Community Advisory Board (CAB) members came together at Bill Bicknell academic centre for a productive day of looking at the study data—together.

Using deviation contrast analysis, the group explored some of the patterns emerging from the data. But the most valuable part of the day was not only what the numbers showed, but the conversations they sparked.

The study team had an opportunity to hear perspectives from community members that may not immediately emerge from the data, while CAB members got to see how researchers move from data to findings and, ultimately, to claims about communities.

Drawing from their own experiences, community members helped the team explore why certain patterns may have emerged. In turn, the study team unpacked the analytical thinking behind the findings, creating space for questions, reflection, and a deeper understanding on both sides.

At LeBoHA, we believe meaningful community engagement in research goes beyond asking communities for information. It means creating opportunities for communities to help make sense of the evidence and contribute to the story that the data tells.

Because behind every number is a lived experience—and understanding both makes research stronger.

🩺 A Voice. A Vision. A Shared Future for Medicine. 🇱🇸

On July 2026, the Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance successfully convened the Medical Internship Caucus Meeting, bringing together medical students and key stakeholders for a day of meaningful dialogue, reflection, and engagement.

The caucus provided a platform for medical students to share experiences, raise concerns, exchange ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations about their training, professional development, and the future of healthcare in Lesotho.

We were honoured by the participation of key stakeholders from across the health and medical education sector, including the Ministry of Health, Lesotho Medical Students’ Association (LEMSA), Lesotho Medical Association (LMA), and Lesotho Medical, Dental & Pharmacy Council (LMDPC). Their presence added valuable perspectives to the conversation and reinforced the importance of creating spaces where medical students can engage directly with institutions and professional bodies shaping the health sector.

Inspired by the spirit of the Basotho pitso—where voices come together to deliberate, listen, and collectively shape the way forward—the caucus reminded us that the future of medicine must be built with the voices of those who will carry it forward.

We sincerely thank all the medical students, stakeholders, partners, and facilitators who contributed to making the caucus a success.

We are grateful to WHO Lesotho for the meaningful engagement and for recognizing the importance of strengthening medical education and health workforce development in Lesotho.

The discussions provided an opportunity to share Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance 's contribution to strengthening the health system through medical education, research, and capacity building, while exploring opportunities to advance the vision of a medical school in Lesotho.

We believe that strong partnerships and collective action will be key in turning vision into reality.

We look forward to continued collaboration with WHO, and the partners across the health and education sectors as we work together towards a stronger health workforce and a healthier, more resilient Lesotho.

Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in global health collaboration.

Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance is proud to celebrate the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with McMaster University 's Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine —a partnership built on a shared commitment to improving health through education, research, and collaboration.

This partnership will create opportunities for collaborative research, faculty and student exchanges, and innovative educational programmes that strengthen healthcare systems, build local capacity, and create lasting impact. Together, we are investing in knowledge, innovation, and the people who will shape the future of healthcare in Lesotho and beyond.

The signing ceremony brought together leaders from both institutions to celebrate this important milestone. We were honoured to hear inspiring remarks from Dr. Brian Jack and Dr. Elizabeth Nkabane-Nkholongo, alongside McMaster's Dr. Sonia Anand, Dr. Paul O'Byrne, and Dr. Lehana Thabane. Their shared vision highlighted the power of partnership in advancing global health through collaboration, innovation, and mutual learning.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose dedication made this partnership possible. As we begin this journey together, we look forward to the opportunities ahead and the positive impact this collaboration will have on healthcare, education, research, and the communities we serve.

Every mother deserves the best possible care when she needs the most.

To help strengthen critical care services for mothers and families Lesotho-Boston Health Alliance recently hosted a two day training on critical care and obstetric critical care for 20 healthcare professionals, including doctors and midwives from Motebang and Maseru District district hospitals.

Led by the visiting faculty member, Dr. Vakil from Cleveland Clinic, the training focused on enhancing the knowledge and practical skills needed to care critically ill patients, particularly mothers experiencing life complications during pregnancy,childbirth and postnatal period.

In addition to the classroom sessions, hands-on technical skills transfer was provided to the ICU team at Motebang hospital, ensuring that critical care equipment can be used safely and effectively when every second counts

Investing in skills of healthcare providers we are helping to improve the quality of care available to mothers and babies giving families, greater confidence or expert care is available when they needed the most
