In the Baltics, patients often wait longer and many medicines never reach patients.
Across Europe, the average wait for new EU-approved medicines is 532 days.

• Latvia: 15% of EU-approved medicines available to patients
• Lithuania: 22%
• Estonia: 23%

This is not only about time.
It’s about whether innovative treatments reach patients in the first place.

Improving access means making the path from approval to patient faster, more predictable and better adapted to smaller markets.

Because patients should have the same chance to benefit from innovation, regardless of where they live.

Basketball brings Lithuania together, so we’re bringing heart health into the game.

In partnership with LKL, kurią remia Betsson, Novartis is supporting a disease awareness campaign encouraging people to know their cholesterol number, because high cholesterol often has no symptoms, yet increases cardiovascular risk.

Our first dedicated Heart Health Game helped take a simple message to thousands in the arena and to TV audiences alike: “Don’t wait for a myocardial infarction - check your cholesterol.”

As Elena Kleiziene, Therapy Area Lead of Cardiology at Novartis Baltics, notes:

“In basketball, you track the score. In life, knowing your health numbers helps you act before problems show up.”

This is a year‑long collaboration, with more dedicated moments during the season to keep prevention front of mind. 🏀

World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day is an annual awareness day dedicated to people living with chronic inflammatory disease that is often misunderstood as back pain, but can significantly affect mobility, daily functioning and quality of life.

Diagnostic delay remains a well recognized challenge, as many patients with inflammatory back pain stay too long outside rheumatology care. On World Ankylosing Spondylitis Day, the focus is on awareness and early recognition.

In Lithuania, an ASAS based digital tool – the “Back Pain Questionnaire” – has been introduced to support faster and more accurate patient pathways.

The tool helps differentiate rheumatological and neurological back pain, encouraging earlier consideration of rheumatology referrals when appropriate.

Key features:
– 5 simple yes / no questions
– Anonymous use, no registration or data collection
– Designed to support awareness and timely specialist referral

Last week, Novartis Baltics team in Lithuania proudly joined DAROM - Lithuania’s annual nationwide clean up initiative, uniting for a cleaner and greener future.

Our colleagues became part of this country wide movement, demonstrating genuine care for our environment and the places we all share. DAROM is a powerful example of patriotism in action - a reminder that responsibility for our natural surroundings is an essential part of representing our country.

By stepping outdoors and collecting waste from natural areas, we made a very tangible contribution. Every filled bag was a small but meaningful win for nature.

Initiatives like DAROM inspire more conscious consumption, sustainability, and everyday choices that matter - for today and for future generations.

Proud of our team for getting involved and making a positive impact - together 💚

Baltics meeting in Vilnius, one question we kept coming back to: how do we turn a spark into something patients can actually feel? A spark alone is not enough, it needs curiosity to challenge the status quo, courage to work across boundaries, and commitment to turn ideas into solutions that matter for people’s lives.

That was the point of our annual “The Spark Within” gathering: to reflect on how our work translates into real change for patients and healthcare systems across the region.

As Ramune Lauciuviene, Country President Baltics & Ukraine, highlighted:
Through meaningful conversations, hands on collaboration, and moments of reflection, we were reminded that every breakthrough starts from within - our mindset, our energy, our willingness to step forward. When we spark ourselves, we spark each other, and that is how real impact is created.

We were also inspired by Dominykas Milasius, Co‑Founder of Delta Biosciences, whose talk “From idea to space” was a great reminder that bold ideas only become real when people stay curious and stick with them. 🚀

Across the Baltics, strong collaboration turns a spark into action: advancing patient access, smarter healthcare pathways and system‑level change where it matters most.

A practical conversation about the future of healthcare in Riga took place at the Novartis Riga office, bringing together Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs and Business Riga to discuss where tangible health benefits for the city’s residents can be delivered.

From prevention and early detection to digital health solutions and partnerships that strengthen the healthcare system, the focus stayed firmly on impact and on moving beyond pilots towards real-world implementation.

This is where progress starts: when cities, innovators and healthcare leaders move from recognizing life sciences as a strategic sector for Riga to working together on solutions that can be sustainably implemented and scaled.

Thank you to colleagues who contributed with expertise and openness Liene Silina, Dita Erna Sile and Agnese Jonate.

Let’s continue working side by side, focused on real outcomes for people and patients🤝🫀

🧬 As we mark World DNA Day it's a reminder that genetics is already changing healthcare, not in theory, but in real life.

Across all Baltic countries, newborn screening helps identify genetic conditions early, often before symptoms appear, supporting timely diagnosis and clinical decision making.

One example is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a severe genetic neuromuscular disorder caused by a single change in DNA. Advances in genetic science now allow SMA to be identified early through newborn screening, supporting appropriate clinical management.

Scientific progress is also visible at population level. The "Lithuanian Genome" project has delivered the first comprehensive genome sequencing of a representative sample of Lithuania’s population, supporting better understanding of rare, inherited and other complex diseases.

🧬 This is how science translates into real impact for patients.

Last week, Novartis Baltics in Latvia welcomed 14 curious high school pupils as part of Junior Achievement Latvia Ēnu diena (Shadow Day) - a national initiative helping young people understand what different professions really look like.

Together, we demystified healthcare: how innovative medicines are discovered, why patients must stay at the center of every decision, and how science, policy, and business come together to improve lives. Students explored Novartis values, real‑life healthcare challenges, and worked on ideas to promote heart‑healthy habits among their peers ❤️

Honest questions, fresh perspectives, and real curiosity remind us why opening our doors matters.
Reimagining medicine starts with understanding it.

Thank you to colleagues who made the day possible and inspired what may be future healthcare leaders.

On World Health Day, we highlight a simple truth: the health of our people defines the competitiveness of our countries. A strong health system is not a cost line, it is a strategic economic asset.

But our preventable and treatable mortality rates remain above OECD levels, and cancer screening rates are still too low, meaning later diagnoses, higher costs, and lost healthy years.

Healthy people:
✔️ contribute longer to the labour market
✔️ drive productivity and innovation
✔️ strengthen national resilience and growth

To stay competitive, the Baltics need:
1. Earlier detection through stronger screening and faster diagnostics
2. Better cardiovascular and cancer care pathways
3. Predictable, innovation ready health funding
4. Fairer financial protection for patients

📣 Our message for World Health Day:
Investing in people’s health is the most effective way to build stronger, more competitive, and more resilient Baltic societies.

Did you know cardiovascular disease affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide? Yet approximately 80% of CVD, including heart attack and stroke, is preventable. Knowing the risk factors associated with CVD is an important first step in helping to prevent it.

🧬 Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a genetically determined cardiovascular risk factor that remains widely under recognized. Elevated Lp(a) can significantly increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, independent of other risk factors.

🔍 Awareness remains low among both the public and healthcare professionals, despite the fact that around 1 in 5 people worldwide have elevated Lp(a) levels, often without knowing it.

🩺 Lp(a) can be measured with a simple blood test, typically needed only once in a lifetime. Greater awareness can help enable more informed conversations about cardiovascular risk and prevention.

On Lp(a) Awareness Day, we support efforts to increase understanding and dialogue around this important cardiovascular risk factor.
