Gastric cancer remains a significant health burden across Europe. Yet, a new publication highlights an important shift: prevention is gaining momentum, supported by a growing number of coordinated European initiatives.
The article provides a comprehensive overview of key efforts, including:
▪️ Population-based Helicobacter pylori screen-and-treat strategies (e.g. GISTAR, EUROHELICAN, TOGAS)
▪️ Integration of gastric cancer prevention within colorectal cancer screening programmes
▪️ Real-world data collection through initiatives such as Hp-EuReg
▪️ Emerging EU-level actions, including the development of European guidelines and the inclusion of H. pylori management in the latest European Code Against Cancer
Importantly, these initiatives are not only generating clinical evidence, but also addressing feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and acceptability, key elements for successful implementation at population level.
