Slimību profilakses un kontroles centrs ir pilnveidojis pieeju valsts organizēto vēža skrīninga programmu novērtēšanai un uzraudzībai, adaptējot indikatoru metodoloģiju atbilstoši pieejamajiem datiem un datu sistēmu attīstībai Latvijā.

Pieeja saskan ar EUCanScreen projekta mērķiem uzlabot vēža skrīninga programmu monitoringu un novērtēšanu Eiropas līmenī.

📊 The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of Latvia (CDPC) Slimību profilakses un kontroles centrs has refined its approach to monitoring and evaluating nationally organised cancer screening programmes by adapting the indicator methodology to better reflect available data and ongoing developments in data systems.
The indicators cover cervical, breast, and colorectal cancer screening programmes and provide structured information on:
📩 invitation and examination coverage,
📈 participation rates,
🧪 distribution of primary screening test results.
The methodological refinement is based on European Commission quality assurance guidelines and internationally recognised recommendations, while also being adapted to the Latvian data environment and its evolving data quality framework.

Gastric cancer remains a significant health burden across Europe. Yet, a new publication highlights an important shift: prevention is gaining momentum, supported by a growing number of coordinated European initiatives.

The article provides a comprehensive overview of key efforts, including:
▪️ Population-based Helicobacter pylori screen-and-treat strategies (e.g. GISTAR, EUROHELICAN, TOGAS)
▪️ Integration of gastric cancer prevention within colorectal cancer screening programmes
▪️ Real-world data collection through initiatives such as Hp-EuReg
▪️ Emerging EU-level actions, including the development of European guidelines and the inclusion of H. pylori management in the latest European Code Against Cancer

Importantly, these initiatives are not only generating clinical evidence, but also addressing feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and acceptability, key elements for successful implementation at population level.

📢 New global guidance on gastric cancer prevention!

An IARC Working Group has released new recommendations on how to implement population-based Helicobacter pylori “screen-and-treat” strategies to help prevent gastric cancer. Still one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide.

The guidance is accompanied by a publication in The New England Journal of Medicine and was led by Dr Jin Young Park (IARC), Head of the Gastric Cancer Prevention Team at IARC.

While this is not a TOGAS output, we’re proud that many experts involved in TOGAS contributed to this Working Group, reinforcing the strong scientific alignment between global evidence and TOGAS’s mission to support prevention and early detection strategies in Europe.👏

🧫 Did you know why antibiotic resistance matters for H. pylori prevention?

Treating Helicobacter pylori can help prevent gastric cancer, but it only works when treatment works.

Across Europe, antibiotic resistance is making some H. pylori therapies less effective. That’s why prevention strategies need more than a “standard recipe”: they require monitoring resistance patterns, choosing the right regimens, and supporting adherence so people can complete treatment safely.

🔊TOGAS supports building the evidence for effective, practical gastric cancer prevention approaches. So future screening and prevention strategies can be designed to work in real health systems.
