Not every piece starts with a clear narrative. Sometimes a client comes in with a feeling rather than a concept, things they’re drawn to without being able to fully explain why. A Spartan in motion, a Maltese cross, broken columns, graphic lines cutting through it all.
My job in those sessions is to find the composition that makes it feel intentional. To take the scattered references and build something that looks like it was always meant to exist as one piece.
The upper arm is forgiving in that sense. Enough surface to let a composition breathe, enough visibility to make it mean something every time it catches the light.
If you want to understand how decisions like these are made, The Echo Foundation Programme has three spots open. Applications close May 16.
