Can climbing improve mental health?

Research presented at the 4th International Conference on Sports Psychiatry found that climbing and bouldering may help reduce depression and psychological distress. Participants reported improved mood, increased confidence and energy, stronger social connections, and fewer intrusive thoughts. Researchers suggest the intense focus required during climbing promotes mindfulness and helps interrupt rumination.

Blue for calm. Green for growth. 💙💚

Along Malta’s southern coastline, where sea meets land and the path unfolds between open horizons and green terrain, movement becomes something simple and grounding. Walking here is not about pushing forward, but about settling into rhythm—step by step, breath by breath.

The blue invites stillness. The green brings renewal. Together they turn a hike into a quiet reset for body and mind.

Two brothers, one start line, one big challenge. 💪

Ian Camilleri and Nigel Camilleri travelled to Šamorín, Slovakia to take on The Championship, one of Europe’s most competitive middle distance triathlon races.

Facing a fast and demanding course alongside some of the strongest age group and elite athletes in the sport, the brothers put their training, determination and resilience to the test.

On a stage where every second counts, both rose to the occasion and proudly represented Malta against world class competition.

Fabio has just done exactly that. 🔥

He has become the first Maltese athlete ever to compete in a Double Deca, one of the most extreme endurance events in the world and he didn’t just complete it. He finished in an incredible 4th place overall! 🇲🇹 👏

To put it into perspective, the challenge includes:

🏊‍♂️ 76 km of swimming
🚴‍♂️ 3,600 km of cycling
🏃‍♂️ 844 km of running

All completed across 22 consecutive days of continuous racing.

This isn’t just about physical fitness. Events like this demand relentless discipline, emotional control, and the ability to keep going when every part of the body is screaming to stop. It’s as much a mental battle as it is a physical one: day after day, hour after hour.

Performances like this remind us that limits are often not fixed. They’re tested, stretched, and sometimes completely redefined.

Huge respect to Fabio for this unbelievable achievement and for representing Malta on one of the toughest endurance stages in the world.

What do you think is harder in a challenge like this the physical pain or the mental battle?

We are so pleased to announce that our MOVErs Prof Nigel Camilleri, Arianne Bonello and Jasmine Borg, together with their colleague Daniel Vella Fondacaro, have just published a case study paper exploring the barriers individuals with ADHD may face in accessing physical activity 👏

Their work highlights how even short bouts of exercise can positively impact ADHD symptoms and overall wellbeing and integrating structured sport and physical activity as an adjunct intervention within therapeutic frameworks for ADHD can significantly enhance quality of life and daily functioning. Importantly, the study reinforces how sport can act as a powerful protective factor in helping neurodivergent individuals navigate challenges and build resilience.

At MOVE - The Sports & Exercise Medicine Centre we are committed to continuous education and research to ensure our practice remains evidence-based and up to date to ultimately deliver the highest standards. A huge well done to the team! 👏

Do keep an eye out for more research coming soon! 🤓

Physician wellbeing is closely linked to patient care and outcomes. 🛡️

A growing body of evidence in lifestyle medicine and lifestyle psychiatry shows that when doctors prioritise healthy habits themselves, patients are more likely to engage in exercise , preventive care, nutrition changes, and healthier lifestyles overall🌿.

In this article, Dr Andrea Saliba explores:
• How physician self-care influences patient trust and behaviour
• The relationship between burnout and quality of care
• The importance of moral resilience in healthcare
• Why role modelling during medical training matters
• The need for healthcare systems that support clinician wellbeing

For psychiatrists and healthcare professionals, self-care is not a luxury. It is an important part of clinical excellence, credibility, and therapeutic authenticity. 🤝

Physicians’ health habits are not entirely separate from patient care, as they can influence the care patients receive. A growing body of research suggests an important link: when doctors model healthy behaviours themselves, patients may be more likely to achieve better health outcomes.
