Massive clinical trial shows daily multivitamins slow cellular aging.
Researchers from Mass General Brigham have identified a simple, accessible tool in the quest for healthier longevity: the daily multivitamin.
By analyzing data from the large-scale COSMOS clinical trial, scientists found that consistent multivitamin use slowed biological aging by approximately four months over a two-year period. Using advanced "epigenetic clocks" that measure chemical changes in DNA, the team observed significant slowing in cellular decay across multiple biological markers. This effect was most pronounced in individuals who were already aging faster than their chronological years at the start of the study, suggesting the supplement provides a critical boost to those most at risk.
In the United States, approximately one-third of adults already take a multivitamin daily, making this discovery relevant to over 80 million people looking to optimize their health.
While chronological age is a fixed number, biological age reflects the actual health and wear of your cells, often predicting the risk of chronic disease and mortality. Senior author Howard Sesso notes that these findings open new doors for safe, low-cost interventions that help people not just live longer, but live better. The research suggests that the same supplements linked to improved cognition and cancer prevention may also be fundamentally slowing the body’s internal clock. As scientists continue to track these participants, the results offer a compelling reason to reconsider the humble multivitamin as a cornerstone of proactive aging and long-term health maintenance.
