⚠️ Ebola Treatment: What We Have and What We Don't

As the WHO responds to the Bundibugyo virus outbreak, a critical reality must be understood: there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this strain.
What we DON'T have:
❌ FDA-approved vaccines for Bundibugyo (Ervebo and Zabdeno only work for Zaire strain)
❌ Specific antiviral medications for Bundibugyo
❌ Monoclonal antibody treatments (Inmazeb is Zaire-specific only)

What we DO have:
✓ Early, intensive supportive care
✓ Rehydration and electrolyte management
✓ Organ function support
✓ Symptomatic treatment (fever, pain management)
✓ Treatment of secondary infections

The critical fact: Survival depends on early, high-quality supportive care in designated Ebola Treatment Centers.

This is why:
◼ Early detection is essential
◼ Trained healthcare teams are vital
◼ Infection control prevents spread
◼ Intensive monitoring saves lives

In the absence of specific treatments, prevention and early supportive care are our strongest weapons.

🔴 Understanding Ebola Symptoms: A TimelineEbola progresses rapidly, but knowing the stages can help with early detection and response.

◼ Days 2-21: Incubation Period
No symptoms yet, but individuals may be infected. Critical: People are NOT contagious during this phase.

◼ Days 1-5: Early Symptoms (Often Misdiagnosed)
High fever (>38.5°C)
Severe headache, muscle pain, weakness
Sore throat, malaise
⚠️ These resemble flu or malaria. Early diagnosis is challenging.

◼ Days 4-10: Disease Progression
Vomiting, severe diarrhoea
Abdominal pain, rash
Organ dysfunction (kidney, liver)
Internal bleeding begins

◼ Advanced Stage: Hemorrhagic Manifestations
External bleeding (eyes, ears, nose, mouth)
Severe shock and organ failure

Why this matters: Early symptom recognition enables rapid isolation and treatment, significantly improving survival rates. Healthcare workers must maintain high clinical suspicion.

🔬 Ebola Transmission: Separating Fact from Fiction

There's a lot of misinformation about how Ebola spreads. Let's clarify:

❌ Ebola is NOT spread by:
- Airborne transmission
- Casual contact or handshakes
- Water or food (except contaminated bushmeat)
- Asymptomatic individuals

✅ Ebola IS spread through:
- Direct contact with blood and body fluids of infected individuals
- Contact with contaminated surfaces (bedding, medical equipment)
- Healthcare settings with inadequate infection control
- Unsafe handling of deceased individuals

Critical fact: People are NOT contagious before symptoms appear. Transmission risk is highest when symptoms are most severe.
Understanding transmission routes is essential for effective prevention and outbreak control.

🚨 Understanding Ebola Virus Disease

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a severe and often fatal illness characterised by sudden fever, weakness, muscle pain, and rapid progression to vomiting, organ dysfunction, and in severe cases, internal bleeding.
There are four main strains affecting humans, with fatality rates ranging from 25% to 90%. The current outbreak in the DRC and Uganda is caused by the Bundibugyo virus (25-40% fatality rate).

As of May 20, 2026, the WHO declared this the 17th Ebola outbreak in the DRC as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

Key fact: The natural reservoir is believed to be fruit bats. Deforestation and increased human encroachment into forested areas significantly elevate the risk of zoonotic spillover.
Understanding transmission and prevention is critical for public health response.

This month, our team travelled to several Elewana locations to deliver on-site First Aid training tailored to hospitality and remote lodge operations.

By training teams directly in their working environment, we focus on practical, real-life scenarios they may face on site
♦ from medical emergencies and trauma response
♦ to effective coordination before evacuation or advanced care arrives

Prepared teams create safer environments for both guests and staff.

Thank you to The Elewana Collection for the warm welcome and continued trust in our training programs.
