Beth and Ben in Malawi

We're Beth and Ben, a trauma surgeon and a psychotherapist. They are partnering with the Christian Health Service Corps (CHSC) as their sending organization.

Our mission is to build capacity for advanced surgical and mental health care in an area of great need, Malawi. Beth has joined the surgical staff at Nkhoma Mission Hospital outside Lilongwe and is helping in the development of an intensive care unit. This will allow Nkhoma to offer more complex surgeries to support a surgical residency program for future Malawian surgeons. The residency is under

PAACS (Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons) and started in January 2022. Ben is continuing his US based psychotherapy practice part time, as well as finding the best use of his diverse skills set which may be doing something else in the field of mental health or assisting in technology development. Rest and renewal - everyone needs them. For this year's spiritual retreat, we were blessed to have Reverend Levi Soko and wife Saviour speak to us through the life of Daniel: being a faithful scholar in a challenging environment. Rev Soko was like a big brother to me a few decades ago in Zambia, trained by both my parents. He teased our residents saying they should feel lucky they only have one Dr Stuebing to contend with. He had two Dr Stuebings! What a beautiful generational legacy. My parents' star student is now mentoring my star students!

Pelvic fracture day again! Not only are our residents learning how to stabilize a broken pelvis and stop the bleeding, they apparently are also learning to whip out their phones to take pictures of the education happening! Thanks to Dr Mumba, I'm in the photo this time 😄 Special effects award goes to my kitchen towels and collander that became a bleeding pelvis in need of "preperitoneal packing"

Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi is building a bigger operating room and ICU, and we need your help to do it! This is how we are training a new generation of surgeons and other medical professionals for Malawi, while caring for thousands with few alternatives.

In order to keep the original plan which includes a floor with wards and a lower level for a training and simulation center, we need to raise half a million dollars before October, and around $4M total to complete the project. The amazing news is we have a generous donor who will match gifts up to $250K in order to make the October deadline!

No power?⚡️No problem! 💪🏾
We are in the middle of our busiest surgery month in history, but that doesn't guarantee everything will run smoothly. Yesterday, there was a temporary issue with the generator that automatically switches on when the power goes out (which it does quite a lot). Thankfully, we have planned for that too. Multiple complex surgeries continued safely during the outage. Important machines have battery backup, we use head lamps so we can always see clearly, and one of our doctors brought in his power bank from home to ensure all the vital things stayed on. Everyone did their part and many patients were helped!

Ever seen your vena cava? The largest vein in the body? In Nkhoma's ICU, we look at the vena cava with ultrasound very often - sometimes several times a day on the same patient! Why? Because it tells us exactly how hydrated your body is, especially when you're very sick. No needles, no blood tests, just a probe and some gel. Here, our residents are measuring the diameter of the vena cava to determine if our patient needs more or less IV fluids.

Today I got to celebrate by operating with another doctor mom, Dr Wongani Kumwenda. She is a fantastic family medicine resident doing her surgery rotation with us. Always smiling, working hard, and being a mom as well. Malawi has a great future with people like her leading us! 💪🏾

Reliable internet at work! Finally! All it took was a Belgian researcher friend to climb onto my roof, and then spend hours and hours with at least 4 devices navigating all the hiccups involved in getting it to work. Standard operating procedure 🤪

So proud of our Nkhoma residents. We had a 100% pass rate, and our very own Dr Mumba got the highest score of any 4th year resident across the continent!!
