As a former ad executive, School of Living Lighter founder Heather Aardema spent two decades convincing people that they needed to purchase the latest thing in order to be happy. Struggling to find deeper meaning in her job towards the end of her career, she pulled out the credit card constantly telling herself "I deserved it" ("it" was usually chocolate, alcohol and random things at Target) since

she told herself that she was the breadwinner and "had" to keep doing work that was no longer fulfilling. This made life complicated and chaotic. Then, she discovered minimalism—the intentional pursuit of what matters most by removing the distractions that remove you from life—and felt herself getting lighter by the day. She walked away from corporate to pursue her dream of helping other women tackle their clutter, un-complicate their lives, and lose weight for good. And with that, School of Living Lighter was born.

We all have mantras, even if we don’t call them that.
Some of the most common ones I hear when it comes to decluttering?
“I don’t have enough time.” “I don’t have the energy.” “I can’t do this.” “I’m not enough.”
Debi Robinson reminds us that those words don’t just stay in the mind; the body hears them too. And over time, that kind of self-talk affect our health and the health of our home, so try this mantra instead... I am safe. I have enough. I am enough.

What’s a story that’s not true when it comes to your clutter?
Just like Debi says, those stories can make us “scared still” and become an excuse to not do anything. Not move, not declutter, not fully embrace our lives because of fear.
And that kind of fear is mind clutter because it gets in the way of you fully living into your potential. You hold back, avoid things you used to do, and start moving through life as if you’re breakable. This isn’t good - when it comes to bones, the less you move, the more you lose.

Turmeric is that anti-inflammatory bright yellow spice that always puts a smile on my face, like sunshine.
On its own, your body doesn’t absorb much of it.
Add a little black pepper, and your body can increase absorption by up to 2000%.
The two together help your body release what it doesn’t need, including the bloat.
It’s a small shift, but it can make you feel a lot lighter!

Avoid liver because it’s full of toxins? I did too. And also because I thought it tasted gross.
But it’s actually really good for you. Your liver processes toxins so they can leave the body; and when your liver isn’t working well, the toxins don’t get stored there, they get stored in your fat.

So eating liver isn’t adding clutter. Instead, it’s actually supporting the organ that helps your body clear things out.

Sometimes clearing things up starts with the right information.

Leaving my corporate job almost a decade ago was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. There was fear, uncertainty and discomfort.
I leaned into it anyway. And it became one of the BEST decisions of my adult life.
Because I got to the other side!!
Decluttering is the same.
That resistance? The urge to stop? The discomfort?
