Can I swim after getting a tattoo in Isla Mujeres? 🌊☀️
This is probably one of the most important questions to ask when getting tattooed while on vacation.
The short answer: No — not right away.
A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound. Swimming in the ocean, a pool, whirlpool bath, or cenote can expose it to bacteria, chemicals, and other contaminants that may cause irritation, infection, or affect the way your tattoo heals.
And there’s another problem in paradise: the sun. ☀️
Fresh tattoos should also be protected from direct sunlight while they heal. Sun exposure can irritate the skin and affect the final result.
If you’re planning to get tattooed during your Isla Mujeres vacation, it’s also important to protect the area you want to tattoo before your appointment. If you go into the ocean, rinse the area with fresh water when you get out. Salt and the sun’s reflection can dry out and irritate your skin, and may even cause it to burn.
Before your appointment, sunscreen is better than sunblock because it absorbs UV rays instead of leaving a heavy layer on the skin. However, the best protection is to avoid direct sun whenever possible and cover the area with a T-shirt, towel, or other clothing. If you do use sunscreen, choose a broad-spectrum product and rinse the area with fresh water after swimming.

Using aloe vera can also help soothe and hydrate skin that has been exposed to the sun. It may reduce feelings of heat, dryness, and irritation, helping your skin recover.
